Job Summary

Purdue University Fort Wayne (PFW) School of Polytechnic invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor/Visiting Assistant Professor of Practice in First Year Engineering beginning August 17, 2026.  The position is 100% teaching (4/4 workload) at the undergraduate level with no advising or service requirement.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Engineering Education, Engineering Technology, or a closely related discipline will be considered as a Visiting Assistant Professor.  Candidates with a master’s degree and broad industrial experience will be considered for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Practice. Responsibilities of this position are teaching and mentoring undergraduate students, particularly those in the first year of Engineering Technology programs. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a variety of foundational courses that support student transition, engagement, and success in engineering technology disciplines, and potential courses matching the candidate’s expertise. Areas of instructional interest include freshman engineering technology, introductory engineering technology concepts, computer-aided design (CAD) for a broad range of majors, industrial practice, project-based learning, and related applied technical topics.

 

Applicants should possess at least 3 years of relevant industrial experience or experience working with engineering technology student populations. Experience supporting student success, retention, transition, advising, or other first-year initiatives is highly valued. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required. Candidates should enjoy working closely with students, thrive in a small experiential classroom setting, and anticipate opportunities to collaborate with industry to strengthen the program. Position is contingent upon available funding and satisfactory background check.

The School

The School of Polytechnic has majors in six-degree programs which include Computer, Electrical, Industrial and Mechanical Engineering Technology along with Information Technology and Construction Management.   All the Engineering Technology programs are accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.  The student educational experience produces graduates who not only have profound technical knowledge, an ability to apply principles, and experiences relevant in their discipline but they can also problem solve, think critically, innovate, and communicate.
