Groundskeeper- Fort Wayne

Job Summary

Perform grounds maintenance functions across all areas of campus. Areas of focus may include landscaping, horticulture, and general grounds maintenance. May transplant and prune trees, shrubs, and flowers; maintain and grow plants from seed; perform snow removal; construct landscape structures; empty trash and recycling; install and maintain irrigation systems; mow, edge, trim, and fertilize. May maintain inventory and general records.

  • Perform grounds maintenance duties including grounds cleanliness, shrub pruning, turf fertilization and mowing, landscape equipment operation, pesticide application and landscape renovation around several campus buildings.
  • Maintain campus lawns by irrigating, mowing, edging, hand trimming, fertilizing, using weed control methods, and performing other grounds duties as assigned. Prepare areas for seed or sod, lay sod and sow seed.
  • Operate riding mowers, carts, rototillers, lawn sweepers, and aerators as needed.
  • Additionally, maintain campus trees and shrubs by planting, pruning, watering, spraying, weeding and cleaning shrub plantings.
  • Operate brush chippers, stump grinders, and water tanker with pumps as needed. Plant, maintain, trim, and prune hedges.
  • Prepare flowerbeds for growing annuals and bulbs. Maintain appropriate recordkeeping and minor equipment operation/maintenance
  • Required to work overtime for special events
  • Subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies

 

MOWING/SNOW REMOVAL/LABOR

  • Maintain campus lawns by irrigating, mowing, edging, hand trimming, fertilizing, and using weed control methods
  • Prepare areas for seed or sod, lay sod, and sow seed
  • Operate mowers, carts, rototillers, lawn sweepers, and aerators as needed
  • Use hand tools such as shovels, hand blowers, etc. to remove snow and ice from stairs, walks, and ramps
  • Operate salt spreaders, tractors, and Bobcats to remove snow and ice from walks, drives, and parking lots
  • Place temporary barrels for special events
  • Maneuver vehicles in congested, narrow areas around people, vehicles, and structures; determine when to deviate from the established schedule
  • Use clean-up caddies or ez reach to remove debris from grounds and change all outside trash/recycling receptacles on a daily basis
  • Unload semi-trailers of large items such as landscape materials and needed supplies with bobcats, tractors, fork-lift, etc
  • Monitor gas pumps and refuels vehicles
  • Grade area as required by the job site to prepare for planting. Install ornamental features (edging, fences, planters, etc.)
  • Construct and install landscape structures including stone walls, tree well grates, patio-stone areas, landscape edging, timber walls/railroad ties, and furniture
  • Deliver ash butlers and trash containers
  • Cultivate, form, and maintain edging as necessary (landscape beds, curbs, walks, etc.)
  • Hand sweep and remove debris as well as utilize backpack blowers for various sidewalk clearing
  • Clean and maintain window wells
  • Perform snow removal using sophisticated snow removal equipment
  • Perform manual snow removal using shovels and other hand tools; spread ice melt and sand on sidewalks, ramps, steps, etc this will include lift, carry, push, pull and move

GROUNDS MAINTENANCE

  • Maintain campus trees and shrubs by planting, pruning, watering, spraying, weeding, and cleaning shrub plantings
  • Operate brush chippers, stump grinders, and water tanks with pumps as needed. Plant, maintain, trim, and prune hedges
  • Prepare flowerbeds for growing annuals and bulbs
  • Use rototillers as needed
  • Spread mulch and remove leaves from various campus locations
  • Repair dead grass and make recommendations with a supervisor as to needed landscape renovation
  • Perform shrub bed and tree well enlargements
  • Dispose of landscape debris; transport to appropriate disposal site and assist with storm damage clean up
  • Water newly installed turf and landscape areas
  • Transplant or remove trees, including stump removal
  • Prune trees and ornamental shrubs
  • Provide input on a scheduled maintenance program for the landscape and implement it as appropriate
  • Trim hedges
  • Trim low branches and ground cover
  • Hand weed and apply pre-emergent to shrub beds and spread mulch
  • Maintain ash butlers and litter receptacles; empty and replace trash and recycling bags, etc
  • Remove leaves from various campus locations
  • Trim turf with string and hand trimmers
  • Clean up debris on sidewalks (spills, gum, graffiti, posters, etc.)
  • Make recommendations with a supervisor as to needed landscape renovation
  • Mow and weed eat
  • Prepare areas for planting, transplanting, rough grading, and seeding
  • Assist in planting flowers, trees, shrubs, and ground covers
  • Make field decisions with the recommendation of the supervisors as to the feasibility of the landscape plan
  • Remove and replace plants/flowers as necessary
  • Store, secure pesticides and other chemicals
  • Record chemical usage by providing data on pesticide, pest, location, date, plant, and volume applied
  • Inspect trees, shrubs, interior plants, flowering, and turf (on and off-campus) for nutrient deficiency, disease, and insect; and report to pesticide applicator
  • Prescribe and apply appropriate pesticides
  • Determine appropriate pest control methods which may include biological, cultural, mechanical/physical, sanitation, or chemical controls, etc
  • Accurately calibrate all applicators/sprayers to attain label recommended rate of application in consultation with the supervisor
  • Monitor the effectiveness of pesticides and take appropriate action to ensure pest control
  • Clean, change and readjust spray heads and check valves
  • Irrigate with portable sprinklers and large water tanks
  • Dispose of landscape debris; transport to appropriate disposal site
  • Assist with storm damage clean-up
  • Clean up the job site

EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE/REPAIR/SUPPLIES/ORDERING/INVENTORY/RECORDKEEPING

  • Repair/rebuild trash receptacles
  • Winterize and store equipment, tools, etc
  • Clean, repair, and paint trash receptacles as necessary
  • Repair departmental equipment during off-seasons as assigned by the supervisor
  • Perform routine, preventative maintenance and cleaning of vehicles such as: checking all fluid levels, tires, fuel, lights, etc
  • Perform minor maintenance and repair on vehicles/equipment such as lubricating, replacement of parts, changing oil, spark plugs, check and change hydraulic lines, battery and cylinder checks and changing filters, etc
  • Advise supervisor of equipment/tools that need to be repaired/replaced
  • Perform general repair and maintenance on hand tools (sharpening, lubricating, cleaning, painting)
  • Coordinate repairs with Lead Mechanic
  • Advise supervisor of needed supplies, equipment, etc. Maintain records of materials used, work completed, and work scheduled

 

OTHER

  • Required to work overtime for special events as directed by the supervisor
  • Subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies

Required

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Three years in grounds maintenance including basic experience in shrub pruning, pesticide application, and grounds cleanliness
  • Demonstrated basic and intermediate skills in landscape renovation, pesticide mixing and recordkeeping, as well as ornamental identification
  • Good Communication Skills, Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematics
  • Good work organization and problem solving ability
  • Landscape equipment operation and maintenance (ie truck, utility cart,etc )
  • Personal protective equipment will be required during specific work duties as determined by the department
  • Work outdoors in temperatures below 32 degrees and above 90 degrees.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and remain in compliance with the Purdue University Motor Vehicle Records policy
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, move up to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to 60 lbs occasionally
