Introduction


Purdue University Northwest seeks an experienced and enthusiastic academic leader to serve as an Associate Professor or Professor in the department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering of the School of Engineering as well as the new Director of the Purdue Water Institute (PWI). This position is associated with the endowed Francis and Elsie Meyer Professorship for the Purdue Water Institute. We are inviting nominations for, and expressions of interest in this position. The director is expected to provide contemporary vision and leadership and will play an important role in expanding and strengthening the growing programs in the areas of civil and environmental engineering.

Purdue University Northwest (PNW) is an academically comprehensive, student-centered university located in northwest Indiana, just southeast of Chicago. College of Engineering and Sciences (CES)


The College of Engineering and Sciences serves over 1,600 undergraduate students and 200 graduate students across a wide range of academic programs. The college includes departments of: Biological Sciences; Chemistry and Physics; Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science; and the School of Engineering which houses the department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering and the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The college also contains three distinguished and award-winning research centers, which include: Center for Innovations through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS), Energy Efficiency and Reliability Center, and Purdue Water Institute.

School of Engineering


PNW’s School of Engineering is part of the College of Engineering and Sciences at Purdue Northwest. The School currently comprises two departments: Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical and Civil Engineering. Closely affiliated with the School are two distinguished and award-winning research centers, the Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS) and the  Purdue Water Institute (PWI).
 

The School is actively working to raise the profile of PNW’s engineering programs while continuing excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, increasing campus diversity and building partnerships outside of the university that will benefit students, faculty, staff, and the region the University serves. The new director is expected to work closely with the Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering and the Director of the School of Engineering to support and implement this vision. In addition, the School is expanding facilities and undertaking major capital improvements across both campuses. Planning has started for a new engineering design studio, with construction for this multimillion-dollar project scheduled to begin in 2020.
 

The School’s programs were most recently ranked 52nd by US News & World Report in their category of Best Engineering Programs at engineering schools whose highest degree is a bachelor’s or a master’s degree. All of PNW’s engineering programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering


The Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering (MCE) is a multi-disciplinary unit serving more than 400 undergraduate majors and 50 graduate students. The department includes 14 tenured and tenure-track faculty members, three visiting faculty members, and three staff members. The unit offers bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical, Civil, and Interdisciplinary Engineering, as well as master’s degrees in Mechanical and Interdisciplinary Engineering with concentration in Civil Engineering.
 

The MCE department takes pride in their students regularly participating in a host of engineering competitions. MCE teams have won many awards in regional, national and international events including NASA’s Great Moon Buggy Race and Human Exploration Rover Challenge, SAE Formula One, EV Gran Prix, ASCE Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge, ASHRAE Best Paper, and AIST Best Paper competitions. Faculty are actively involved in research and have garnered awards or patents for their work.
 

The department is on a path of vigorous growth with the expectation of and support for the addition of new academic programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additional programs being considered include environmental engineering and materials engineering, and the unit is also expected to contribute to a new bio-engineering program discussed in the School.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should possess the following skills and qualifications

  • PhD degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field;
  • Academic qualifications for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in the department.
Responsibilities


Successful candidates are expected

  • to teach courses at undergraduate and graduate level;
  • supervise graduate student theses;
  • build close ties with industry;
  • develop an innovative externally funded research program particularly in environmental/water resources, water and wastewater treatment, engineering hydrology and hydraulics, recycling, environmental remediation, and valorization;
  • and participate in the ABET accreditation process and interdisciplinary efforts within the School of Engineering and the College of Engineering and Sciences.
