Assistant Professor of Education: Elementary or Early Literacy Focus

 

The School of Education and Counseling is seeking applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Education with expertise in Elementary or Early Literacy beginning August 16, 2021.

 

Position Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will serve as a key member of the School’s educational programs and will be expected (a) to teach courses related to: early literacy methods; intermediate literacy methods; media for children; literacy intervention strategies; and evaluation of literacy acquisition (b) assess and evaluate student learning outcomes, skills, and dispositions; (c) supervise practicum candidates, student teachers, and other clinical/field-based experiences; (d) serve on program and school committees; and (e) demonstrate commitment to diversity and equity in education through teaching, community engagement, and advising of student organizations.

Core Competencies

Required Experience:

  1. A minimum of three years of successful teaching in P-12 environment;
  2. Experience collaborating with school, agencies and colleagues across disciplines;  
  3. Experience supervising and supporting candidates in field/clinical settings;
  4. Experience providing outreach and professional development opportunities around literacy instruction, intervention, and supports; and
  5. Ability to demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

 

Individuals who meet the following criteria are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • A professional agenda of teaching, scholarship, inquiry and/or service focused on language and literacy acquisition as transformative practice as well as a commitment to equity, diversity, and social justice issues;
  • Skills in program development and performance-based assessments;
  • Experience with online teaching and distance coaching; and
  • Evidence of experience with program accreditation.

Qualifications/Requirements

The successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree with expertise in Curriculum and Instruction, Literacy, Early/Emergent Literacy, Dyslexia or related field from an accredited institution.  Candidates nearing completion of their doctorate (ABD) are encouraged to apply.

The College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences serves over 1,500 undergraduate students and 250 graduate students across a wide range of programs. In additiion to the School of Education and Counseling, other administrative units within the college include:

The School of Education and Counseling programs are nationally accredited through the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP),  the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), and the state of Indiana.
