Overview of Social Media Specialist

Our Marketing and Communications Department at Purdue Northwest is looking for a creative and innovative Social Media Specialist. This position creates content across the university’s social media channels to showcase campus life and impact student recruitment and retention. Responsibilities include engaging with the campus community to build digital content, photography and videos that best represents the University and shares the brand.

The Marketing and Communications Department is the official marketing and news source for Purdue University Northwest. This team engages a variety of channels and creative practices to find the best ways to share PNW’s stories. Purdue Northwest has two scenic campuses just minutes from the highway in Hammond and Westville, IN. This position will primarily work on campus, with opportunities to amplify PNW’s story wherever it’s being made.

Duties and Responsibilities of Social Media Specialist

  • Ideal candidate will be creative, innovative, outgoing and enthusiastic about the future of digital marketing and media. This position is responsible for
  • Create, design, deliver wide variety of dynamic visual, graphic, video, public relations content across integrated marketing platforms
  • Create engaging micro stories that can be shared through social media and other marketing channels to promote the PNW brand
  • Use your expertise to provide consultation and assistance regarding social media and integrated marketing to the university community
  • Use creative and innovative techniques to capture imagery and videos across both campuses to show university life.
  • Provide analytic reports and plans for improvement of social metrics year-over-year.
  • Assist with strategies for ad and integrated marketing campaigns.
  • Research and implement best practices for social media and digital marketing for the university
  • Monitor the university online brand presence
  • Collaborate with photo and video vendors

Experience of Social Media Specialist

  • Minimum two years of experience working in digital marketing, multimedia, or social media
  • Highly qualified candidates will have experience in a marketing or advertising agency, corporate or higher education communications department, or a related field
  • Examples of social media strategies or marketing campaigns must be provided

Education of Social Media Specialist

  • Bachelor's degree in multimedia, marketing or related field

Core Competencies of Social Media Specialist

  • Excellent creative writing skills.
  • Proficiency in design, videography, and an eye for photography are a plus
  • Understand needs of target audiences and create strategic media that meets expectations of each demographic
  • Demonstrate excellent decision-making skills, customer service orientation, and ability to plan and perform complex work
  • Must be able to generate and manage digital information, including strategizing, writing, editing and managing web and social content, photographs and videos
  • Must be proficient in using Adobe Creative Suite for video and photo editing, social media management tools, Wordpress, emailing tools, Office suite and Google Drive
  • Must have an understanding of and experience in institutional branding and integrated marketing strategies
  • Must have the ability to effectively manage multiple projects/tasks of varying complexities, meet deadlines, work within a budget, and work well under pressure
  • Must be able to communicate well with others both written and verbally at various levels of the university
  • Be dependable, creative, and results-oriented with attention to detail; able to work directly with internal and external constituents
  • This position regularly requires weekend, holiday and evening hours as scheduled
