Overview of Kitchen Supervisor

Purdue University Northwest, Hammond Campus Food and Beverage Services is seeking a Sous Chef/Kitchen Supervisor to work closely with our Main Cafe and Alumni Hall Banquet team on our beautiful Hammond, IN campus.  The Kitchen Supervisor plays a key role in supporting culinary operations by overseeing daily kitchen activities, assisting with food preparation, and ensuring high standards of quality, safety, and efficiency. This position works closely with the culinary leadership team to deliver exceptional food service and maintain smooth kitchen operations.  This position will be overseen and supported by the Director of Food and Beverage/Executive Chef, Executive Sous Chef and the Hammond Food Service Director. 

Duties and Responsibilities of Kitchen Supervisor

  • Prepare and cook menu items according to established recipes and standards
  • Ensure consistency, quality, and presentation of all dishes
  • Training and Team Development
  • Train and mentor kitchen staff on food preparation, safety, and kitchen procedures
  • Assist in executing daily menus and seasonal offerings
  • Ensure accurate portioning and plating standards are followed.
  • Catering Operations
  • Support the preparation and execution of catering events
  • Coordinate with team members to ensure timely and high-quality service
  • Update and manage menu management systems
  • Ensure accurate and timely presentation of menus and information
  • Jamix System Management
  • Maintain and update Jamix display systems for recipes, menus, and production needs
  • Assist with ordering food, supplies, and kitchen inventory
  • Monitor stock levels to minimize waste and shortages
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of kitchen areas
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, and health regulations
  • Step into leadership role during shifts as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education of Kitchen Supervisor

  • HS Diploma/GED required 

Experience of Kitchen Supervisor

  • 3+ years of experience working in a professional kitchen
  • Previous experience in a commercial kitchen or food service environment may also be considered
  • Experience with menu management systems preferred 
  • Culinary school experience, preferred
  • Leadership experience preferred 
  • PNW Dining Services experience preferred

Core Competencies of Kitchen Supervisor

  • Knowledge of food preparation, cooking techniques, waste reduction and cost awareness  
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation (ServSafe or equivalent)  
  • Ability to provide staff training. development, team supervision and shift leadership 
  • Ability to delegate tasks and manage workflow  
  • Flexibility and adaptability - may also need to travel to our Westville, IN Campus or Gabis Arboretum in Valparaiso, IN for events as needed 
  • Strong communication, time management, proble solving, decision making and multitasking skills
  • Attention to detail  
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment  
  • Ability to use Inventory tracking and ordering systems  
  • Basic computer skills (email, spreadsheets, POS systems)  
  • Reliability and accountability  
  • Ability to work all Banquet Positions and coordinate events  
  • Food Safety certificate and Alcohol Certificate  
  • Valid Driver’s License for use of Campus Catering Vehicle 
  • Must meet the Minimum Driver Qualifications as defined by the Use of Vehicles for University Business Policy
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift and carry 25 to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to 60 lbs. occasionally. 
  • Flexible scheduling, such as nights weekends and holidays as needed
