Overview of Research Engineer

The Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CVIS) is seeking a Research Engineer to join their team.  CIVS, established in 2009, is a multidisciplinary research center which applies cutting-edge simulation and visualization technologies to solve real-world problems with academic, industry, and community partners. With its missions in innovation, application, and education, CIVS is globally recognized for its innovative approaches to developing solutions to complex problems. CIVS, in collaboration with more than 160 organizations, has made significant educational and economic impacts. CIVS also serves as a showcase for the NWI region, highlighting the region's commitment to innovation, cutting-edge technologies, collaboration, high-quality work, and real-world problem solving.

 

The Research Engineer will perform research for both CIVS and SMSVC; work with Purdue Northwest researchers and collaborators from other institutions and industry to utilize visualization techniques and technologies for research, education, and application to real world problems. Major activities would include 3D model design, development and support for advanced visualization tools, mentoring graduate students and research projects; supporting CIVS hardware and software technologies and interactive techniques; researching and integrating emerging technologies into existing workflows; and supporting activities involving advanced scientific visualization, virtual reality, augmented reality, and related technologies.

 

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in technical proposal writing, strong communication skills, and managing teams of graduate students. Also preferred are a strong publication record and excellent programming skills. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work and collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers and engineers, in addition to experts from the manufacturing field with decades of experience.

Duties and Responsibilities of Research Engineer

VISUALIZATION DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

  • Design and implement 3D models (including 3D modeling, texturing, and implementation in a modern game engine environment) for assets in interactive training tools and other visualization software developed at CIVS
  • Evaluate new approaches, software tools, and technologies to enhance user capabilities
  • Develop new techniques and software for virtual reality, augmented reality, and related technologies
  • Assist in the development, configuration, operation, and support of CIVS facilities

 

PUBLICATION & PRESENTATION

  • Create presentations on research findings and recommendations for submission
  • Present results to business constituents and industrial partners and project sponsors
  • Write research papers for submission to professional journals and give presentations at conferences
  • Develop and provide workshops for CIVS staff and students as needed

 

RESEARCH AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT

  • Perform research in the visualization focus areas of the SMSVC and individual CIVS research projects
  • Support monthly project technical meetings, review semi-annual presentations & reports, and contribute technical expertise in cutting-edge visualization techniques and technologies to ongoing research
  • Travel to SMSVC member facilities and present technical results of projects to industrial research teams to disseminate information and gather feedback

 

PROJECT SUPERVISION

  • Contribute to supervision of industrially-supported projects
  • Additionally, formulate project focus areas and mentor undergraduate senior design groups in their work on 4th year capstone projects with direct applications to industry

  • 3D visualization and programming, specifically 3D modeling, texturing, and experience with modern game engines such as Unity 3D
