Overview of Seasonal Lead Gardener

The Gabis Arboretum is seeking a knowledgeable, self-motivated individual as the Seasonal Lead Gardener. This position is responsible for maintaining the arboretum’s plant collections and leading volunteer efforts in the gardens. Knowledge of gardening practices and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions is required.

Hourly Pay Rate: $13/hour

Duration: March 15-October 31

Schedule: Minimum of 20 hours a week

Duties and Responsibilities of Seasonal Lead Gardener

• Maintains gardens, trails, roads, paths, turf and other outdoor areas of the property
• Trims and edges around walkways, flower beds, and walls
• Maintains garden beds by: watering, mulching, deadheading and removing debris, litter, weeds, etc.
• Assist in maintaining Gabis Arboretum’s large plant collections: conifers, oaks, roses, and native plants
• Prunes shrubs and trees to shape
• Plant grasses, flowers, trees, and shrubs
• Supervise gardening volunteers while fostering positive relationships and encouraging volunteer engagement in the gardens
• Assist in updating plant collections through our Botanical Garden Database software
• Sharpens tools such as weed cutters, edging tools, and shears
• Performs custodial functions of Gabis facilities as needed
• Performs event set-up, break down, and assists event and facility rental staff as needed
• Other duties as assigned

Education

• High School Diploma/GED required.

Experience

• Minimum of 1 year related experience in garden care, pruning, and weed identification
• Knowledge of tree and plant care and identification throughout the various seasons
• Knowledge and identification of native plants and invasive species
