Title:  Gabis Arboretum - Living Plant Collections Record-Keeping Intern

Job Summary


The Gabis Arboretum at Purdue Northwest is home to thousands of plants, some rare and endangered, that need to be identified and recorded. These functions are crucial in supporting the arboretum’s mission of environmental education. Once plants are identified and recorded, each plant is properly labeled so that it can be shared with the public. The intern will gain experience in core areas of plant records management through experiential learning and self-guided project work. This internship is unpaid and the schedule is very flexible.


The intern will be assigned, based on their preference, to one or more areas of the arboretum and asked to:

  • Identify plants and assess plant health using resources such as plant guides, internet searches, databases from other arboreta, books, etc.
  • Utilize living collections management software (BG-Base) to record plant information.



High school education minimum.

If requesting academic credit, student must work with academic department to verify if internship qualifies for credit. This internship does not have to be done for academic credit but can be solely to gain experience.



  • Ability to commit to completing the project
  • Ability to use a laptop or desktop computer
  • Ability to identify plants native to Indiana or ability to use resources to identify
  • Ability to be outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Valid driver’s license is preferred but not required
