Overview of Academic & Student Success Advisor


The Academic Center for Excellence at Purdue University Northwest is seeking an Academic and Student Success AdvisorThe primary purpose of the Academic & Student Success Advisor is to provide individual, appreciative, and transformational advising to students on matters such as selection of major, course selection and sequencing, and academic performance.  Our Academic Center or Excellence leads several important university initiatives that have a role in student retention and success: Academic Advising, Academic Recovery Program, Supplemental Instruction (SI), Tutoring, Series of Success Workshops and more

Duties and Responsibilities of Academic & Success Advisor


  • Advises and provides guidance to student processes and responsibilities necessary to satisfy academic requirements to declare a major, and successfully transition into that major in order to graduate
  • Proactively reaches out to targeted populations, and maintains current and accurate records documenting individual student progress toward degree requirements
  • Utilizes all resources to support and strengthen communication and outreach with assigned population
  • Provides a positive environment which assists students in their personal and academic growth and development
  • Discusses with and assists students in completing and processing necessary academic forms
  • Refers students to appropriate offices, learning resources and personnel as needed
  • Works closely with faculty, administration, student outreach services, and other Purdue University Northwest staff in implementing, evaluating and improving student retention
  • Assists students identified as academically at risk and participates in the development and implementation of intervention efforts by the University
  • Participates in the evaluation of the effectiveness of programs, courses, advising materials, policies and procedures

Experience of Academic & Student Success Advisor


  • Three years of professional work experience required.  
  • Professional work experience within a public higher education setting in an academic advising and/or retention-related position preferred.

Education of Academic & Student Success Advisor


  • Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, or related field (e.g., social work, counseling, education)

  • Ability to learn, understand, interpret and relay the full range of student services available, including enrollment services, academic policies & procedures of PNW and associated federal & state regulations
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Possess excellent written, verbal, organizational, and time management skills
  • Adapt to changes and willingness to learn new things
  • Initiate & maintain professional relationships with diverse groups & sensitivity to the needs of students
  • May have to work evening & weekend hours
  • Strong interpersonal and human relations skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality is essential
