We are currently seeking a full-time and onsite Academic Advisor in the Office of Advising & Student Academic Success. Under the leadership of the Director of Advising for the College of Science within the Office of Advising and Student Academic Success (ASAS), the Academic Advisor provides appreciative advising, continuous and empathic support, and strategic direction to students in their assigned student group. The annual salary for this position is $46,818.00.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Commit to cultivate in themselves the habits of life-long learners and to intentionally model these values, practices, and skills to students.
  • Engage conscientiously in the training, team learning, and self-development opportunities promoted within ASAS, NACADA, etc., and pursue certifications and other educational attainments appropriate to the advisor's goals for personal and professional development.
  • Strive to contribute to a culture of teamwork across the ASAS and within the university.
  • Model constructive leadership and followership to other advisors and to students.
  • Create an open and respectful environment by utilizing a student-centered practice that emphasizes mutual respect, dignity, self-awareness, and authenticity. 
  • Center the student within an asset-framed approach to advising that tailor’s educational guidance to meet students where they are and recognizes the value of each student’s lived experiences, strengths, and networks. 
  • Guide students in their degree plan, course selection, and in registering for courses. 
  • Identify and communicate campus activities related to students' major.
  • Maintain a consistent pattern of contact and communications with assigned students. 
  • Continuously evaluate and improve the use of advising technologies to better support student needs and goals.
  • Use data to provide timely outreach to students on their academic progress and conduct audits on student’s degree progress. 
  • Assess when a student’s situation requires referral to campus resources. 
  • Maintain and ensure confidentiality of student records. 
  • Teach students about the university’s structure, systems, policies, and practices.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative, professional working relationships with faculty within the assigned department(s).
  • Communicate regularly with faculty to ensure advising practices align with departmental curriculum, policies, and learning outcomes.
  • Serve as a liaison between students and faculty to support academic success, clarify expectations, and address academic concerns.
  • Partner with faculty to support student retention, progression, and engagement within the major.
  • Engage in ongoing communication with the department chair(s) and dean to identify and strengthen collaborative initiatives that promote student success.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in a field relevant to the position.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to identify appropriate campus resources.
  • Ability to adapt and work effectively in a dynamic, changing environment.
  • Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of experience in higher education student advising.
  • Knowledge of undergraduate student development.
  • Knowledge of advising theories and best practices in higher education.
  • Knowledge of academic programs and majors at Purdue Fort Wayne.
  • Familiarity with student information systems (Banner, Degree Works, EAB Navigate, Smart Plan).
