Career Counselor

The Career Counselor will assist students with their professional development, while educating and preparing them for a lifetime of career success. The Career Counselor should possess a spirit of eagerness to take initiative and proactively engage all constituents. They should be comfortable with and able to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment. The position will be accountable for guiding students through a career-discovery process leading to career options that are best-fit with passions, strengths, values, and skills. The Career Counselor is accountable for establishing effective connections with diverse populations and groups of students for effective outreach to assigned student populations, such that the assigned students receive the full benefits and impact of the Career Development Center. The Career Counselor is responsible for ensuring that their assigned students have developed the career readiness competencies needed to ensure their success in the transition to the world of work.


Your day to day:

  • Provide a full spectrum of career counseling services for students and alumni. 
  • Provide approximately 30+ hours of individual, group, and virtual career counseling for students and alumni weekly and document all interactions in the Career Development Center contact management system.
  • Serve as liaison to students and faculty in designated Colleges.
  • Support students with making career decisions; assist with writing resumes, job search correspondence and graduate school essays; as well as preparing for interviews.
  • Conduct outreach programs and workshops.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director to present workshops to guide students in their career development and job search processes
  • Provide industry-specific workshops and programming to assigned colleges/schools  
  • Interact with alumni and employer partners particularly in colleges assigned as liaison. 
  • Assist Associate Director with developing a robust campus wide Student Employee Program which includes, but not limited to, workshops, trainings and researching best practices as well as Student Employee Program events.
  • Collaborate with other staff to ensure the success of the office programming, events, and projects.
  • Serve on a variety of departmental, divisional and university committees.
  • Participate in on-going professional development activities and represent the department at professional conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • You have gained at least one year in a higher education or secondary institutional setting such as career services, counseling, academic advising, admissions or related field.
  • Knowledge of career trends, career assessments, and career resources with demonstrated ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with both employers and academic units. 
  • Knowledge of various industries and academic programs with ability to make connections between these. 
  • Capable of managing multiple projects; proven ability to design and implement programs/workshops; and commitment to student and alumni career development. 
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills, presentation skills and competent in use of Microsoft Office and technology including digital communication and virtual meetings in a professional setting. 
  • Demonstrated counseling skills with ability to serve constituents from a variety of backgrounds and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
