Civil Engineering Lab Technician

Purdue University Fort Wayne is seeking a Lab Technician for The Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering.

 

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

  • Provides technical support for the civil engineering and construction engineering technology (CE/CET) laboratory facilities.
  • Technical support includes civil engineering materials, environmental, fluid mechanics, soil construction engineering technology and foundation, strength of materials, transportation, construction management and surveying.
  • Will be expected to provide, under indirect/minimum supervision, technical support and supervision to lab activities and experiments, student worker activities, senior design and student competitions projects, and faculty research lab activities.
  • Technical support includes safety, operation, maintenance, schedule repair of equipment, and inventory control of all labs.
  • Provides professional and technical assistance to faculty, staff, and students working with them to develop new or modified lab equipment, components, products, and measuring instruments.
  • Identifies and recommends purchases of equipment and supplies as needed and coordinates the purchase of equipment.
  • Works to ensure proper safety procedures and protocols are being followed in all CE/CET labs.
  • Operate, maintain, and supervise the civil and construction engineering technology (CE/CET) laboratory facilities and equipment as directed.
  • Set-up and prepare samples and equipment according to the standard of each experiment.
  • Coordinate lab activities and supervise students while assisting with research, senior design, and extracurricular projects in the lab.
  • Order and maintain inventories of supplies and equipment needed for testing purposes; establish and maintain records of disposition and operating condition of on-site test equipment.
  • Work with department safety committees to ensure proper safety procedures and protocols are being followed; perform safety self-audits and by-task assessments for labs in order to maintain safe lab environment.

 

What are the position essentials required as a Lab Technician?

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Minimum three years related work experience.
  • Background knowledge of civil and construction engineering technology practices including lab tests and analyses.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills with emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Must have basic computer skills and be able to write technical reports and conduct field inspections.
  • Ability to schedule/perform regular calibration of equipment, update software, maintain testing equipment and instruments and prepare lab samples.
