Purdue University Fort Wayne is currently seeking a fulltime, onsite Construction Observer in our Facilities Management Administration department. The Construction Observer inspects and reviews contracted work performed on construction projects at university locations. The pay for this position is $65,000.00 annually.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Ensures work and materials comply with the project drawings and specifications and respective building codes.
- Resolves conflicts with a variety of university staff and outside contractors associated with project work.
- Reviews and recommends payment of monthly invoices from contractors.
- Initiates contract change orders, coordinates project meetings, and performs final inspections.
- Inspects all mechanical installation work to ensure that the piping, hangers, insulation, access doors, pipe sleeves, ductwork, mechanical equipment controls, fire sprinkler systems, sewers, sheet metal, HVAC, and temperature controls are installed as per drawings, specifications, University Standards and the respective building codes.
- Inspects steam distribution system for complete hook up of all equipment, the air conditioning cooling system, and the freeze protection system for both cooling and heating coils.
- Performs final inspection of all general construction, mechanical work/systems, and electrical work.
- Checks and tests the complete sprinkler system with Safety and Security Department to comply with all respective building codes.
- Coordinates work schedules for the project to ensure the proper sequence of completion.
- Compiles monthly project progress reports to the Superintendent of Construction and informs Project Manager of project status.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Vocational/Technical school *Experience will be accepted in lieu of education: General Trades Training including Carpentry, and/or Electrical, and/or Plumbing (emphasis on Electrical and Plumbing) *
- Previous construction field supervision experience required in one of the trades: General - 8 years construction field experience in general building construction (carpentry, masonry, reinforced concrete, or other related areas) or Mechanical - 8 years construction field experience in plumbing/steam fitting or sheet metal/HVAC or Electrical - 8 years construction field experience in electrical work.
- Must have a valid Indiana driver’s license and remain in compliance with the Purdue University Motor Vehicle Records policy.
- Thorough knowledge of local, state and national building codes or mechanical or electrical construction trade and related building codes.
- Ability to read and interpret design drawings and specifications.
- Organizational, verbal, written and leadership skills.
- Computer skills are desired.
- Must possess a learning orientation to changing technology impacting business process.
- Subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications:
- . Apprenticeship in carpentry, masonry or related trade preferred
- Apprenticeship in plumbing/steam fitting or sheet metal/HVAC preferred
- Apprenticeship in electrical work or related trade preferred.
