Job Summary
The Gabis Arboretum is seeking a knowledgeable, self-motivated individual as a seasonal grounds worker. This position is responsible for maintaining and caring for the arboretum’s facilities and grounds. You will also assist with events and volunteer efforts at the Arboretum. Knowledge of grounds responsibilities and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions is required.

- $13.00/hour
Schedule:
- Monday through Friday
- Some weekends

- March 15 – October 31, 2026
Duties and Responsibilities
Grounds and Facilities
- Maintain trails, roads, paths, and other outdoor areas of the property
- Performs lawn care such as mowing, trimming, reseeding, raking, and edging
- Assists in maintaining garden beds by supporting gardening staff, mulching, removing litter, etc.
- Assists in pruning shrubs and trees as needed
- Assists volunteers while fostering positive relationships and encouraging volunteer engagement at the Arboretum
- Repairs fencing, picnic tables, benches, gates, walls, and walks as needed
- Performs custodial functions of Gabis Facilities such as cleaning restrooms, lobbies, offices, etc.
- Adheres to all safety regulations while operating equipment
- Other duties as assigned
Event Support
- Performs on-site event set up, break down, and cleaning
- Assists with events and facility rentals as needed
Education
- High School Diploma/GED preferred
Experience
- Minimum of 6 months related experience and/or training; equivalent combination of education and experience is required
- Experience operating various equipment such as mowers, hand and power tools is preferred
- Some tree and weed identification is preferred
- Some basic mechanical knowledge is preferred such as checking oil, checking and filling equipment with correct fuel, and recognizing engine issues or failures
Core Competencies
- Ability to work independently and as a team
- Must be able to walk for extended periods of time, stand, bend, kneel, push, and pull
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to use mowers, blowers, weedwhackers, shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, etc.
- Ability to use various hand and power tools including hammers, saws, drills, etc.
- Interpersonal skills to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with staff, visitors and volunteers during all interactions
