Senior Marketing Strategist

Job Summary

The Senior Marketing Strategist advances Purdue University’s brand strategy and platform in partnership with specific Colleges, Schools or Departments through strategic marketing planning and tailored brand solutions to ultimately build target audience affinity, enhance national and global reputation, attract the very best students, motivate alumni and donors, and recruit high quality faculty and staff.


Reporting to the Director of Brand and Marketing Strategy within the Office of Marketing and Media, the Senior Marketing Strategist must be knowledgeable in the College, School or Department’s goals, the University’s Mission and its brand strategy to add value through strategic marketing counsel, best practices and resources. As a critical liaison between central marketing and the lead marketer or communicator within an assigned unit/s, this individual must be able to add material strategic marketing value, commission and help shepherd market research as well as interpret and execute upon its insights, guide the strategic marketing planning process, influence without formal authority, build consensus, problem-solve, and generally operate with empowerment and optimism. 


This individual will collaborate with central marketing peers, market research, external strategic partners and marketing agencies, as well as Deans, Department Heads, and the marketing leaders across the campus and system, to inspire and ensure the execution of stellar, on-brand and in-character, customer-centric, insight-informed, timely and cost-effective marketing solutions for Purdue University and its Colleges, Schools, and Departments.


This individual will be instrumental in helping cultivate, excite and unite a world-class marketing community at Purdue University, build confidence and credibility in Purdue Marketing as the driver of great brand positioning, promotion and preservation across the system, and enhance both awareness of and affinity for Purdue University with multiple audiences.  This position will also:


•    Develop and foster a deep understanding of University, college and departmental marketing goals, needs, capabilities, and challenges
•    Partner, influence, and support the execution of the University’s brand strategy within the Colleges and  departments to build greater target audience affinity and drive desired results
•    Help Colleges and departments craft deliberate marketing objectives that ladder to and materially contribute to the realization of University, College and departmental goals
•    Help colleagues translate University, college, department, and unit marketing objectives into deliberate marketing strategies and tailored solutions to drive desired results
•    Commit and engage in growing the University community’s multi-dimensional marketing capabilities and sophistication
•    Evaluate trends and innovations, consistently consider new data and remain up-to-date with the latest marketing techniques and developments, both within as well as outside of higher education
•    Operate to improve audience experience with and affinity for Purdue University
•    Operate with a commitment and orientation towards optimism, empowerment, excellence and respect



•    Bachelor’s degree in marketing, market research, advertising or related field
•    A strong passion and discipline for strategic brand building and insight-based marketing
•    The ability to develop and coach the creation of insight-based, strategic and integrated marketing plans
•    4+ years of traditional marketing and brand building experience (agency or client-side)
•    Demonstrated high levels of creativity, curiosity, empowerment, learning agility, effort, and a desire to improve
•    Exceptional writing and presentation skills, so as to engage effectively with and influence a wide range of constituencies
•    Ability to inspire a shared vision and influence across all levels and functions of an organization
•    Strong problem solving and project management skills, ability to prioritize work and manage within limited resources
•    A strong commitment to diversity and inclusion
•    Demonstrated experience in effectively managing and coaching external vendors and marketing agencies to shared success
