Application Programmer

Job Summary

The Application programmer for the Office of Indiana State Chemist is responsible for the analysis, design and programming of department application software. As well as design, code, document and test new and existing programs. This position will develop, implement and/or maintain computer programs for information systems and analyze/design departmental systems and consult with users to determine requirements. Other responsibilities will include but are not limited to:


  • C++ and JavaScript development while providing expertise in the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), from concept and design, to testing with experience in building high-performing, scalable, enterprise-grade applications
  • Design, build and maintain desktop and web-based application software to facilitate department data retrieval
  • Participate and at times lead group meetings with laboratory, clerical and administrative staff
  • Perform needs assessments and requirements gathering for future data management applications as needed
  • Keep abreast of as many aspects of new client-side software technologies with regard to agency’s application needs through researching and testing products that have the potential to facilitate the department's mission, and by attending professional meetings



  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Technology, or related field
  • Three years' experience analyzing functional business applications and designing object-oriented programs to fit the needs of the business
  • In lieu of degree, consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience (Associates' + 5 years' experience)
  • Ability to write highly developed computer programs using C, C++ or C# programming language



  • One-year experience with MySQL database programming or SQL variant
  • Ability to write client-side applications in JavaScript programming language
  • Strong SQL database knowledge
