Job Summary

The Department of Animal Sciences is seeking a Communication Specialist. This position will proactively meet with the department head, faculty, staff, and student groups to identify and develop communications, including interesting stories or promotional/outreach communications. This position will also oversee the social media activity for the department, work with the department head, faculty, staff and alumni to write and/or edit content, design fliers, posters and other promotional research/educational materials and actively participate in college and campus communications meetings, activities and working groups. Additional duties will include but are not limited to:


  • Ensuring timely posting of activities and new information and coordinate regular updates of information
  • Producing content for hallway video screens
  • Working with the Department Head, faculty, staff, and alumni to write and/or edit content for departmental, college, university, regional and national awards
  • Taking photos and video of departmental events, student club activities and experiential learning activities
  • Creating and maintaining a robust catalog of images and video for future communications or marketing
  • Serving as a liaison for the department and collaborate with staff of the Agricultural Communication group, and represent Animal Sciences in College web and communication initiatives



  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing or advertising
  • 1 year of experience with professional writing and/or communications
  • Knowledge and understanding of agriculture, particularly animal agriculture and related clientele, including prospective students and youth groups with interests in agricultural, biological and/or veterinary sciences, as well as agricultural producers, supporting industries and alumni
  • Strong writing skills and an engaging writing style for technical and non-technical topics
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to organize and lead communication projects
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media venues



  • Experience with photography, videography, graphic design and/or web publishing
