Senior Farm Technician

Job Summary

The Senior Farm Technician will provide skilled labor needed to conduct agronomic crop research. In addition, this position will provide general farm skills as part of a team who operate an 1,408 acre field research farm for over 50 Purdue University researchers as well as utilize a full understanding of crop production and farm techniques so that agronomic plot research can be conducted successfully and so the farm operates successfully. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:


  • Performing maintenance and repair of all farm machinery, research equipment, grain facilities, and tools
  • Assisting in the construction of farm buildings, fences, grain bins, tile drainage, and facilities as well as maintaining buildings, grounds, fences, utilities, and roadways
  • Designing and fabricating structural improvements for farm equipment and research projects
  • Assisting with grain drying, storage, and handling
  • Performing snow removal and grade roads
  • Assisting in the management of both field and shop operations
  • Preparing fields and plot seedbed, fertilizing, applying anhydrous ammonia, cultivating, disking, mixing and applying pesticides, irrigating, planting, harvesting, field scouting, soil sampling, calibrating equipment, making machinery adjustments, handling grain, applying manure, and using electronic devices with tractors, sprayers, or combines
  • Maintaining a record of field activities and maintenance activities traditionally and electronically, including the use of computers and other office chores
  • Assisting many field researchers in the operation of field research
  • Adapting farm equipment electronics to special research implements and monitoring and maintaining the agricultural weather station daily
  • Assisting with educational events, especially agronomic classes and field trips
  • Helping host up to 50 field days or tours and many more individual tours yearly
  • HS Diploma/GED
  • 4 years of machinery operation, maintenance, and repair/farming and crop production experience
  • Within 90 days of employment or transfer must possess;
    • Valid Indiana Commercial Driver's License with endorsements
    • Valid State Chemist's Commercial Pesticide Applicator License, cat. 1 (Pesticide) and cat.14 (Fertilizer),
    • Meet University requirements to wear a respirator as personal protective equipment, including face fitting tests and passing a University approved physical,
    • Meet University requirements for Fork Lift Driver Certification
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to operate farm machinery, use tractor or sprayer electronics, and calculate pesticide applications
  • Ability to climb and work at heights of 100 feet and carry or lift 50 to 80 pounds frequently, and up to 100 pounds occasionally
  • Ability for overtime during evenings, mornings, and weekends of the busy seasons, specifically spring and fall
  • Math, reading comprehension and communication skills



  • College course work or BS in Agriculture (Agronomy)
  • Field research experience
  • Mechanical, electrical, and carpentry skills
