The Assistant Academic Department Chair position will provide support to Purdue University Global’s School of Multidisciplinary and Professional Studies in the Professional Studies program. 

Job Summary:

The Assistant Academic Department Chair provides administrative leadership, faculty management, and curriculum oversight within the Professional Studies department. Working under the direction of the Department Chair and Dean, this position is responsible for driving student success, maintaining academic quality, managing adjunct and full-time faculty, and assisting with curriculum maintenance and accreditation processes.

What To Expect In This Role:

Key Responsibilities

    • Faculty Leadership & Supervision:
      • Direct, train, and mentor full-time and adjunct faculty in Social Science and Humanities courses.
      • Evaluate faculty performance through classroom observations, course reviews, student satisfaction metrics, and grade distribution analysis.
      • Address faculty and student escalation issues in a timely and professional manner.
      • Assist in class scheduling and faculty section assignments.
    • Curriculum & Academic Quality:
      • Collaborate with Course Leaders and the Curriculum team to review, update, and maintain course content.
      • Ensure all course materials align with institutional standards, learning outcomes, and relevant regional/programmatic accreditations.
      • Support continuous assessment of student learning outcomes across general education courses.
    • Operational & Administrative Support:
      • Maintain operational communication with remote faculty across multiple time zones.
      • Participate in departmental meetings, committee work, and university-wide retention or academic initiatives.
      • Perform other academic and administrative duties as assigned by the Department Chair or Associate Dean.

Experience:

Required Qualifications:

    • Education: Master’s degree in a field that has related leadership experience, operationally/ technically savvy, and must have prior faculty experience.(Terminal degree/Ph.D. frequently preferred).
    • Teaching Experience: 3–5+ years of post-secondary online teaching experience.
    • Administrative Experience: Prior experience in academic administration, course leadership, or faculty management in an online higher education environment.

Preferred Competencies:

    • Strong communication skills and demonstrated ability to work independently in a remote/virtual environment.
    • Proficiency with Learning Management Systems (LMS) and video conferencing tools (e.g., Brightspace, Zoom, MS Teams).
    • Familiarity with adult learner strategies and general education assessment.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office suite software, such as MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint, as well as Google applications such as Gmail, Chat and Meet. Experience with Brightspace education software is preferred.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, balance competing demands for time, and prioritize workload to meet deadlines.
  • Effective analytical skills with the ability to assess situations, resolve issues or make recommendations as appropriate.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt communication style and method to suit different audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with a professional demeanor with people at all levels within the organization and from diverse backgrounds.
  • Capable of building strong working relationships across teams, departments and Schools.
