The Education Specialist, Veteran Student Support Services (VSSS) will provide support to Purdue University Global. Building on Purdue University's mission to provide greater access to affordable, high-quality education, Purdue University Global is a public, nonprofit institution offering a world-class education online.
The project this position serves is a 5 year grant cycle funded through September 24, 2030, requiring funding approval from the Department of Education each year throughout the funding cycle. Compensation will include a full benefits package.
Job Summary:
The Education Specialist (ES), Veteran Student Support Services (VSSS) provides comprehensive support through individualized academic, personal, and career advising. Responsibilities include coordinating tutoring services, delivering academic skills development and financial literacy training, and assisting students in securing financial aid such as the FAFSA, GI Bill, and additional grant aid for veterans. The ES also offers technology support, assistance with targeted students, help with applying to graduate and professional programs, and conducts and coordinates cultural enrichment workshops with participants.
What to expect in this role:
- Oversight of VSSS program activities, including but not limited to:
- Processing applications, conducting assessments, test analysis, development of education plans, and other activities targeted towards participant academic success.
- Monitor students' Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) and conduct outreach and follow-up as necessary.
- Conduct and/or coordinate workshops designed to address any emotional or social needs.
- Participate in the development of new resources or enhancement of existing resources within the VSSS program.
- Assess VSSS program efforts to ensure effectiveness. Recommend minor changes in systems and processes to solve problems or improve effectiveness of area.
- Oversight of Peer Tutors/Mentors:
- Hire, train, and supervise all FWS Peer Tutors/Mentors
- Design and implement recurring training.
- Recruitment and Student Support Services:
- Develop and implement recruitment strategies targeted towards potential participants.
- Coordinate and communicate with the campus community to raise awareness about VSSS.
- Assesses and works with participants to develop an Individual Graduation Plan (IGP).
- Assess and work with participants to develop an Individual Graduation Plan (IGP).
- Administer services to assist students with achieving a variety of goals including academic, leadership, social or career focused objectives. Provide guidance to students to overcome barriers to success.
- Support the office functions by completing all other duties and special projects as assigned directly related to the VSSS program. Hours of work may include evening, weekend and occasional travel.
Experience:
- Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree counseling, education, higher education, education administration, or other related fields.
- Minimum 1+ year experience working with low-income, first generation students.
- Strongly preferred qualifications:
- Master’s degree in counseling, education, higher education, education administration, or other related fields.
- 3 years experience working with low-income, first generation students.
- TRIO experience and understanding of adult learner theories.
- Education can be substituted for experience, but experience cannot substitute for education.
What we're looking for:
- Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office suite software, such as MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint, as well as Google applications such as Gmail, Chat and Hangout.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment with minimal supervision, balance competing demands for time, and prioritize workload to meet deadlines.
- Effective analytical skills with the ability to assess situations, resolve issues or make recommendations as appropriate.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt communication style and method to suit different audiences.
- Capable of building strong working relationships across teams, departments and Schools.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with a professional demeanor with people at all levels within the organization.
