Job Summary

Staff Scientists in the Purdue Electron Microscopy Center perform multidisciplinary training and research and work as part of a team reporting to the Director.  Staff Scientists will each have a variety of expertise and will act as a team to cover all instrumentation and preparation equipment.  Each staff scientist will have some specialist areas of expertise that will supplement the basic tasks and needs of the Center.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Train new EM users and support their skill development, provide technical support and collaborative assistance to users on their projects.  Training will be unique to each situation and may require specialized attention and is highly dependent on the experiment needs.
  • Perform instrument calibration, alignment and maintenance and trouble-shoot problems with all equipment and instruments.  Determine and implement best methods to resolve instrument issues and where appropriate carry out those repairs.  Supervises the maintenance of the facility's equipment, arranging for repair as necessary
  • Where required, perform laboratory experiments, select appropriate microscopy procedures in cooperation with graduate students, faculty and outside users.
  • In consultation with the Director, be responsible for ordering and receiving parts/supplies, managing chemical waste compliance, handling administrative support for office duties and center billing.
  • Operate the microscopes and auxiliary equipment, produce and interpret images and data in support of visiting researchers from academia, national/government laboratories and industry.
  • Develop protocols for performing advanced EM techniques, training procedures and user tests.

What We're Looking For:

  • Ph.D
  • Six or more years of relevant experience
  • An equivalent combination of required education and related work experience will be considered
  • Ability to operate scanning and transmission electron microscopes and associated accessories
  • Ability to interact with people at all levels, from undergraduate students, graduate students, post-docs, staff faculty and industry customers
  • Willingness to learn
  • Team-oriented work ethic
