Job Summary

As part of the Office of Indiana State Chemist (OISC), the Feed Chromatography Laboratory Manager is part of a team of dedicated people aiming to ensure the safety of animal feed, the protection of consumers, and the health of the animal food manufacturing industry in Indiana. The Feed Chromatography Laboratory Manager is also part of the OISC’s hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) program ensuring agricultural hemp grown in Indiana is below 0.3% THC.

 

The Feed Chromatography Laboratory Manager supervises analytical chemists and oversees activities in the Office of Indiana State Chemist’s feed chromatography lab. This position helps ensure samples are completed efficiently and timely, reviews and processes data, determines appropriate testing methodology, supports method development, and oversees instrument performance and maintenance to assist our regulatory mission. The Feed Chromatography Laboratory Manager works closely with the Feed Administrator on testing capabilities, methods, and equipment requirements for the agency.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Supervise analytical chemists which may include but not limited to training and oversight of employees, including disciplinary action and performance review of assigned employees, overseeing daily job responsibilities, issuing work assignments, managing analyst time, sample priorities, interpretation of results, reviewing purchase orders
  • Oversight of method development activities including project direction, data review and preparation of manuscripts for submission to published journals, Federal agencies or associations concerned with method validation activities
  • Coordinate with Feed Administrator on new methods needs and analyte testing
  • Help implement new or updated policies, procedures and standards regarding research and/or laboratory operations
  • Assist in preparation, implementation and maintenance of a quality assurance plans, procedures or qualifications in coordination with the Quality Director and maintains all data as required
  • Assist with implementation with ISO 17025 or other applicable standards by direction of the Quality Director
  • Assess laboratory needs, obtain quotes, and prepare budgets for the acquisition of new lab equipment
  • Coordinate with Feed Administrator on laboratory equipment needs
  • Oversee maintenance and repair of lab equipment and ensure lab safety protocols are followed
  • Participate in national or regional associations and programs, especially the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), AOAC, the Food Emergency Response Network and the Hemp Regulators

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Nutrition, Agriculture, or other related field
  • 3 years of experience in pharmaceutical, chemical, or food science laboratory environment and hands-on experience in liquid chromatography, complex analytical techniques, and method development work
  • In Lieu of degree, consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required experience (Associate's degree + 5 years of experience; HS/GED + 7 years of experience)
  • Effective writing, speaking and facilitation skills to establish and maintain working relationships with analytical chemist and laboratory personnel, federal, state, and local agency representatives, industry representatives, and the public
  • Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records, gather and analyze documentary evidence, and prepare oral and written reports
  • Demonstrated ability to promote cooperative communication and facilitate relationship building amongst diverse groups
  • Demonstrated ability to support individuals and teams; establish relationships on trust and mutual respect, collaborative and cooperative team problem solving, solicit input from others, trust and support decisions of others
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and be flexible, responsive to change, and ability to think creatively
  • Occasional travel
