About Our Opportunity:

The Research Veterinary Assistant will work as part of a pre-clinical studies team with the responsibility of assisting with studies involving laboratory animals. This position includes care of animals in a research setting as well as facility upkeep and maintenance. This position requires a person to be flexible, detail oriented and work with a team but also independently. The candidate must perform the necessary functions to fulfill research obligations while staying within animal use protocols and regulatory compliance.

 

Who We Are:
The Center's focus is on clinical and translational research. In a human medicine context, the focus is on the translation from rodent models through pre-clinical studies using principles of clinical medicine. In a veterinary context, it spans the entire translational continuum, including the application of research to primary veterinary care settings. Examples of studies conducted in the Center facilities are pre-clinical studies of orthopedic devices intended for animal and human use, clinical studies of treatment and prevention of respiratory diseases in horses and animal clinical trials evaluating the treatment of bladder cancer in Scottish Terriers, an animal model of human bladder cancer.   

 

What We’re Looking For:
Required:

  • Bachelor's degree.  
  • One year of experience within animal research, clinical, or agricultural setting.
  • In lieu of degree, consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience (Associate's Degree + 3 years of experience).
  • Comfortable working with animals in a research setting; willingness to learn to work with and handle a variety of species.
  • Ability to read, speak, and understand English to effectively communicate and understand others. Strong oral and written communication skills,
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to learn and follow safety procedures; includes the wearing of personal protective equipment as required.
  • Ability to work as a reliable member in an established research team and willingness to learn new procedures.
  • Ability to learn to perform routine animal care and evaluate the general condition of study animals under guidance of experienced staff
  • Must be able to work well with others and work in a team environment
  • Ability to follow written preventative maintenance instructions for a variety of equipment
  • Some weekend and evening work will be required; weekend work and late duties will be rotated among team members
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Basic computer and data entry skills

Preferred:

  • NAVTA Veterinary Assistant certification.
  • AALAS certification.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory compliance issues in animal research.
