Job Title:  Senior Computational Scientist

The Computational Scientist role will be an integral part of our researcher-facing team. We are seeking individuals with expertise in computational science and will provide support, mentorship, and training in cyberinfrastructure (CI) best practices to the successful candidate to support research teams at Purdue and nationally. 

In this position, you will advise researchers in the best use of a broad set of high-performance and cloud computing systems, tools, and software to enable research productivity. You will partner with Purdue and national researchers to co-create and co-learn research activities and relevant advanced computing and data capabilities. You will utilize creativity and innovation to solve computing problems encountered by researchers. You will work collaboratively with other staff, researchers, and vendors to implement novel computing and data technologies that enable and/or improve computational research. You will collaborate with other staff to provide regular training workshops to researchers to help them use computational tools. You will participate in national computing activities by attending workshops, conferences, and potentially presenting research.

Under minimal direction, you will partner with Purdue and national researchers to co-create research activities and relevant advanced computing and data capabilities. You will utilize creativity and innovation to solve computing problems encountered by researchers and determine computational strategies raised by cutting-edge research. You will work collaboratively with other staff, ‎researchers, national partners and vendors to implement novel computing and data technologies that enable and/or improve computational research. You will collaborate with other staff to provide regular training workshops to researchers to help them use computational tools. You will participate in national computing activities by attending workshops, conferences, and potentially presenting research.  

 

We are hiring for two positions. One of the two positions works closely with climate science practitioners, so that they may jointly advance the community-driven development and application of climate models. The second position engages with research that involves fluid and plasma simulations and help improve the existing codes, leverage accelerators, and/or run at greater scales, resolution, and efficiency.

 

This is a dual level posting in which the hiring manager will determine the level with candidate.

This position is grant funded and is subject to continued funding.

What We're Looking For:

Education and Experience:
As the Computational Scientist you will need the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field 
  • Two (2) years of experience in using high-performance computing, coding, and/or scripting, preferably in Python, C++, Fortran, or bash
  • Two (2) years of experience working with researchers or research groups

 

As the Senior Computational Scientist, you will need the below information:

  • Master's degree in a quantitative field 
  • Two (2) years of experience in using high-performance computing, coding, and/or scripting, preferably in Python, C++, Fortran, or bash.
  • Two (2) years of experience working with researchers or research groups
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience will be accepted

 

Skills Needed:
As the Computational Scientist you will need the following:

  • Ability to:
    • work as part of a high performing team in a collaborative environment
    • work positively in an inclusive and diverse environment
  • Knowledge of Linux operating system and version control software, i.e. GIT
  • Demonstrated:
    • ability to set objectives and work independently on large, moderately complex projects or assignments under general supervision
    • skills in self-motivation, analytical, and problem-solving skill
    • the ability to collaborate and/or consult with researchers
  • Ability to work/learn to work with climate, weather model, or engineering disciplines

 

Preferred:  

  • Ability to effectively make presentations and develop and present training material ‎
  • Parallel programming using MPI, OpenMP, CUDA
  • Experience in analyzing and optimizing performance of scientific applications


As the Senior Computational Scientist, you will need to have the skills needed as a Computational Scientist (listed above) have:

  • Good verbal and written English communication skills including the ability to ‎consult with researchers
  • Demonstrated project management and prioritization skills with the ability to plan, organize and prioritize tasks, and complete projects with minimal supervision

 

Preferred:  

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively mentor students
  • All other preferred skills listed under the computational scientist position
