As the Associate Steam Utilities Mechanic you will learn to and/or perform tasks associated with the maintenance and operation of campus 125-PSI and 15-PSI steam systems, chilled water distribution systems, and natural gas distribution systems. You will learn the utility tunnels inspection routes to support the maintenance of the equipment in the steam distribution system, equipment including condensate pumps, vacuum pumps, air distribution components, pressure regulating valves, safety relief valves, and steam traps. This position will also learn chilled water distribution system to be able to identify, maintain and operate equipment associated with the system. This role serves as a rudimentary link between the WADE power plant and other facilities where utility production occurs and of the buildings on campus where utilities consumption occurs. Individuals in this position are required to have basic/working knowledge of the aspects of the production, distribution, consumption and return of these utilities systems. Personnel in this position are required to respond to utility upsets, leaks and perform emergency repairs to satisfy campus needs. This position is subject to 24-hour callbacks, planned and unplanned overtime. Working flexible hours to meet campus needs is also required.
 

As the Steam Utilities Mechanic you will perform maintenance of the steam and chilled water distribution system. These tasks include: inspecting equipment providing steam to buildings including condensate pumps, switches, water heating equipment, pressure regulator, valves, traps in the utility tunnels and buildings. These inspections include the detection of steam, compressed air, natural gas and water leaks. Also noting the condition of T-com exhaust fans and lighting system in the tunnels. Provide maintenance and repair of all utility system equipment. Able to perform activities in W.O system. Perform pipe fitting, and other required tasks, on all of the utility system components to maintain the systems. Cross-train with other Utilities Operation personnel. On 24 hour call-irregular planned and unplanned overtime. Perform preventative maintenance identified through the Maximo Work Order system. 

 

This is a duel level position that the hiring manager will determine the level for the candidate.

 

What We're Looking For:

Education and Experience Needed:

As the Associate Steam Utilities Mechanic, you will need the following:

  • High School Degree or High School Equivalency (HSE) 
  • Some experience in the following areas is desirable but not required: industrial pipefitting, steam, and chilled water distribution maintenance
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license

 

As the Steam Utilities Mechanic, you will need the following:

  • High School Degree or High School Equivalency (HSE)
  • Four (4) years steam fitting, mechanical, training in pipe trades, plumbing or related utilities experience 
  • Experience in maintenance and repair of Steam/Chilled Water system 

 

Skills Needed:

As the Associate Steam Utilities Mechanic, you will need the following:

  • Ability to perform basic math equations consistent with job functions
  • Must:
    • have a high mechanical aptitude with strong verbal and written communication skills
    • have basic computer skills with the aptitude to learn more complex programs
    • be familiar with basic use and both hand and power tools
  • Capable of working in a variety of conditions and environments including confined spaces and adverse temperature conditions

 

As the Steam Utilities Mechanic, you will need the following:

  • Good verbal and written communication skills 
  • Knowledge of shop mathematics with an ability to read and comprehend technical materials, read prints and schematics 
  • Basic knowledge of hand and power tools and mechanical aptitude 
  • Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolds and work from heights up to 100 feet 
  • Ability to:
    • work under a variety of conditions, such as confined space (tunnels, pits), heights and hot/cold conditions  
    • lift and carry 25 to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 60 lbs. occasionally  
    • obtain natural gas master meter certification
