Job Summary

Purdue Animal Science Research and Education Center (ASREC) is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic. In this role, you will be working primarily with the Farm Operations Unit which consists of 2,500 acres of corn, soybeans, hay, wheat, and pastures.

 

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Working daily with Farm Operations Manager and other staff in a team-oriented atmosphere to implement maintenance and repair on equipment associated with crop, forage, and livestock production
  • Performing preventative maintenance and repairs, inspecting, operating, or testing machinery or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and perform mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic maintenance and repair
  • Dismantling machinery/equipment to remove defective parts and perform repairs if necessary
  • Fabricating, welding, replacing, repairing, cleaning and maintaining farm equipment, trucks, and livestock equipment
  • Ordering/maintaining inventory of essential parts and supplies and maintaining accurate repair records
  • Operating and calibrating agricultural equipment associated with crop, forage, and livestock production
  • Operating Purdue University trucks and Class A commercial vehicles transporting grain and other farm commodities.
  • Fabricating, welding, and modifying equipment for research purposes
  • Performing general upkeep on buildings and grounds at the Animal Science Research Center
  • Supervising student and temporary employees

What We're Looking For:

  • High School diploma/GED
  • 3 years mechanic/farming experience
  • Valid Class A Commercial driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within six months of employment
  • Must obtain a Category 1A pesticide license within one year of employment
  • Ability to operate, calibrate, maintain, and repair agricultural equipment including tractors, planters, sprayers, harvesters, and other implements
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and repair trucks, trailers, and semi tractors
  • Excellent verbal comprehension, ability to interpret manuals, and work under pressure
  • Excellent communication skills utilizing verbal, written, email, and text
  • Intermittent overtime and weekends are required as determined by supervisor
  • Valid U.S. or Canadian driver’s license

 

Nice to Have:

  • Associates or vocational tech degree in Agriculture or a mechanical field of study
