Job Description
The Division of Recreation & Wellness employees are focused on the customer, provide the best service possible, and always emphasize safety in our programs and facilities. Purdue University Swim Instructor Aides are responsible for assisting Water Safety Instructors when teaching adult and youth swimming lessons for the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program. This can include group, private, and semi-private lessons. Primary duties include following the lesson plans provided by Water Safety Instructors, setting up the teaching area, cleaning up the teaching area, and delivering a quality swim lesson educational experience to participants. Swim Instructor Aides will assist in teaching group lessons with a certified LTS instructor and can individually teach private lessons.
Prerequisite(s)
- Successful completion of swim skills evaluation conducted by Assistant Director and/or Program Coordinator(s)
- Opportunity to take the American Red Cross WSI certification course available (will increase pay rate)

Position Responsibilities
- Assist the WSI in conducting their prepared lesson plans
- Follow the prescribed American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim curriculum
- Teach associated skills correctly to the corresponding class participants
- Maintain a high standard of cleanliness throughout the facility
- Maintain a safe learning environment for both youth and adult participants
- Know and enforce all policies and procedures for aquatic facilities
- Perform daily upkeep of supplies throughout the facility
- Exhibit friendliness, diplomacy, and tact in responding to customers
- Handle emergencies and prioritize responsibilities while continuing to provide the highest level of customer service
- Maintain confidentiality and exhibit professional conduct when handling sensitive information
- Responsible for all scheduled shifts (based on class/exam schedules for the semester)
- Must attend all scheduled staff meetings to gain and/or share pertinent information
- Other duties as assigned
