Job Summary

Provide instruction, training and motivation to prepare student-athletes for practices, game or competitive events.  Demonstrate/instruct student athletes on sport performance principles, game strategies and safety rules.  Provide sport program management support to the head coach.  Evaluate student-athletes’ strengths and weaknesses as possible recruit or to improve the current student athletes’ technique to prepare them for competition.  Serve as mentor to student-athletes with academic and personal issues. 

What You'll Be Doing:

COACHING/INSTRUCTING

Provide instruction, training, and motivation to prepare student-athletes for practice, games or competitive events.  Instruct student-athletes in sport performance principles, game strategies and safety rules.  Observe athletes in practice and training, analyze performance data/statistics and instruct athletes on technique.  Collect and analyze tactical/statistical data and game film of opposing teams with student-athletes and recommend game-day strategies for student athletes.  Plan, schedule, organize and conduct practice sessions.

 

RECRUITING

Recruit potential student-athletes via telephone calls, letters, emails or home visits.  Make recommendations regarding whether or not to extend official campus visits and/or athletic grant-in-aid support to head coach.  Detail student-athlete assessments through written recruiting reports/notes and provide recommendations on student-athlete recruitment.  Recommend locations and student-athletes to be targeted for future recruitment efforts.

 

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING/WELLNESS

Partner with strength and conditioning staff and athletic trainers on student-athletes overall physical preparation and health status.  Assist in planning and developing strength and conditioning programs including scheduling, coordinating workouts, providing motivational support and reinforcement to enable student-athletes to achieve maximum performance.  Review and maintain progress records/stats and recommend changes to achieve desired goals, as necessary. 

 

ACADEMICS/STUDENT-ATHLETE SUPPORT

Mentor student-athletes on academic and personal issues.  Discuss class registration deadlines and follow-up to ensure required paperwork is completed, reports of missed classes or study table hours.  On road trips, conduct study sessions, if needed.  Partner with Athletics Student Services to identify and monitor academically “at risk” student-athletes.  Recommend disciplinary action to resolve athletic, academic or behavior problems as they arise.

 

OTHER

Represent Head Coach and /or Intercollegiate Athletics Department at fund-raisers, outings and alumni events.

What We're Looking For:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Two (2) years coaching or playing experience at the collegiate level or above 

 

Skills needed:

  • Knowledge of sport-specific fundamentals, techniques and safety rules & regulations. 
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, communicate, and adhere to University, Big Ten Conference and NCAA policies, procedures, rules and regulations. 
  • Excellent communication (oral & written), planning, organizational, interpersonal, interviewing, strength training and counseling skills. 
  • Ability to recruit on a national level, instructs and motivates student-athletes on sport fundamentals, techniques and safety rules and regulations, and provides academic and personal mentoring. 
  • Ability to influence and build positive relationships among diverse individuals including student-athletes, parents, coaches, media, faculty, staff, students and general public. 
  • Must be able to foster a participative management style to successfully guide the work of others. 
  • Must possess a learning orientation to changing technology impacting sport. 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be in good standing with the University vehicle policy – Use of Vehicles for University Business (IV.A.1). 
  • Personal computer and related software skills, e.g., work processing, spread sheets, data query, internet, etc., necessary.
