The Associate Environmental Technician for Radiation will serve as Environmental Technician in support of professional staff members in Environmental Health and Safety. You will sample and analyze liquid radioactive waste, review results, and select proper method of disposal.  Perform surveillance of facilities for proper practices and calibrate instruments. Assist in spill and decontamination responses as requested. Assist other departmental areas as needed. The position is required to cross-train with other areas of Environmental Health and Safety. May involve exposure to heights, extreme temperatures, hazardous chemicals, and confined spaces. Follow standard procedures. Work is routine and closely supervised.  

 

What We're Looking For:

Education and Experience Needed:

  • A High School Degree or High School Equivalency (HSE) required
  • Some experience or knowledge of handling radioactive materials or relevant work experience
  • A valid driver’s license is required

 

Preferred:

  • Previous experience with radioactive or hazardous materials handling 
  • Previous experience in a laboratory or technical setting
  • College coursework and/or a basic knowledge of science, biology, physics, math and/or chemistry  


Skills Needed:

  • Good work organization, written and verbal communication skills and instructional skills are required
  • Must be able to wear respiratory protective equipment.  Required to pass an annual physical examination
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including respiratory protection, gloves, goggles, etc.  
  • Must be able to lift and carry 25 to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to 60 lbs. occasionally
  • May be subject to 24-hour callback

 

Preferred:

  • Basic computer skills 
  • Knowledge of campus buildings and locations
