Required hours may include days, evenings, weekends, overnight hours and holidays

This is a SUMMER 2026 position, with potential to remain on for the fall semester 2026. Postion start date is effective May 18, 2026 and must be available to work through the start of Fall Semester, 2026.

Job Description

The primary role of the BCC Library Aide position is to staff the BCC Library’s circulation desk, assist library patrons, and process requests for and returns of library materials. The goal of this position is to give students valuable real-world experience in an Academic & Special Library environment. This position should work 10 hours per week during the current semester. Those hours may be worked in any combination, at the discretion of the direct supervisor. The person in the BCC Library Aide position must be reliable, organized, responsible, and flexible. They must also be ambitious, detail-oriented, creative, and driven.

 

Prerequisite(s)

The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable in customer service and pay close attention to details.

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and minimum of one semester of college coursework successfully completed
  • Must be actively enrolled at Purdue University, Purdue Global
  • Previous work experience within customer service positions preferred, but not necessary
  • Edits to bullets below are permitted but overall, these bullets should remain consistent for all student positions
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Flexible and dependable with a strong attention to detail

Position Responsibilities

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Maintain high standard of cleanliness throughout the facility
  • Maintain safety and risk management standards of the department
  • Perform daily upkeep of supplies throughout the facility
  • Exhibit friendliness, diplomacy, and tact in responding to patrons
  • Handle emergency situations and prioritize responsibilities while continuing to provide the highest level of service to patrons
  • Maintain confidentiality and exhibit professional conduct when handling sensitive information
  • Serve and participate on committees within the division to provide feedback from a student lens
  • Responsible for all scheduled shifts (based on class/exam schedules for the semester)
  • Must attend all scheduled staff meetings to gain and/or share pertinent information
  • Greet everyone who comes into the BCC Library
  • Open and/or close the BCC Library
  • Answer the phone, answer patrons’ phone questions, and take messages for the BCC librarian to respond to patrons
  • Empty indoor and outdoor book drops and process returned materials
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces regularly; vacuum spaces as needed; maintain a tidy and organized library
  • Perform shelving, re-shelving, and shelf-reading to keep library materials in order using the Library of Congress cataloging system
  • Shift library materials on shelves and assist in shifting or shelving projects (moving large collections of books)
  • Regularly check for deliveries of Library materials to the BCC Library
  • Keep printer and photocopiers stocked with paper and toner; clear paper jams; contact ITAP when needed
  • Keep stats and enter anonymous library usage data for the BCC Librarian to report to the BCC’s Director
  • Communicate with the Librarian and with co-workers
  • Regularly check your purdue.edu email account for communication from the BCC Librarian & BCC Staff members
  • Assist patrons with using course reserves, the photocopier & scanner, and all audio/visual equipment
  • Help library patrons search the Purdue Libraries’ catalog and find the resources they seek; assist patrons in finding materials within the Library
  • Provide tours of the BCC Library and the BCC building
  • Other duties as assigned
