Job Summary

This position is created to ensure complete, accurate medical records and improve the accuracy of charges entered onto client bills. As a bill auditor, this position will review hospital charges for the Purdue Veterinary Hospital (PVH) both prospectively and retrospectively; will independently perform a detailed review of patient medical records to ensure that patient examination, procedures, diagnostics, hospitalization, ICU, and other nursing and supply charges are entered accurately for services rendered, prior to and following patient discharge. Position performs analysis for completeness, assembly, data entry, and retrieval of medical records for PVH patients.  Must learn and apply medical record departmental policies with regard to releasing and charging for medical record information. Understand and utilize the electronic Hospital Information System, electronic communication system, medical coding resources and the PVH Electronic Medical Record (EMR) in order to perform Medical Record Department procedures including coding diagnoses and procedures for data collection to be used for research, teaching and retrospective studies. Perform medical record retrieval and process release of information requests. Assist with providing patient health information and billing information to clinicians, staff, students, clients, and external customers. 

 

What We're Looking For:

 

Education and Experience Needed:

  • AS or BS in healthcare, medical, veterinary, or business-related field or RHIA, RHIT, CCS, RVT or CMA or three years of clerical or clinical experience working in a medical/veterinary office setting or healthcare revenue cycle services required
  • Formal training or one year of medical billing or medical coding experience preferred
  • One year of coursework in anatomy and physiology required
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Experience reviewing/reconciling patient's medical records, verifying procedures, diagnostics, testing, supplies, pharmaceuticals, and treatments; documenting services to be billed, and ensuring input prior to discharge preferred
  • Candidates who are currently enrolled in an approved RHIA or RHIT or coding certification educational program and within 1 semester of completion will also be given consideration
  • Medical coding experience or medical office or veterinary office experience including medical record processing preferred
  • Hands-on experience with an established filing system preferred

  • Must be able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced demanding environment handling multiple tasks simultaneously while paying close attention to details
  • Knowledge and skills needed to verify that clinician's orders are equal to services provided
  • Ability to use veterinary or medical terminology and technical knowledge to discuss veterinary cases with clinicians and to inform clinicians of items to bill or discrepancies in billing vs. services provided
  • Must be a self-starter, able to work independently, as well as in a team environment, while demonstrating a high level of initiative and performing duties with minimal supervision
  • Must have the ability to apply math and basic analytical skills to review and correct data, prepare/proofread correspondence, reports, and informational documents
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records
  • Knowledge of medical and/or veterinary terminology, strong computer and data entry skills, human or veterinary hospital medical record processing skills, good oral and written communication skills, with fluency in English
  • Customer service skills including excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and computer experience including outlook and Word required
  • Excellent telephone etiquette and attention to detail required
