The Senior Business Manager will oversee the financial and business operations for the assigned area, which has annual weighted operating expenditures exceeding $55 million. This role serves as the primary resource and liaison between the department, the college, and central university offices. Responsibilities include interpreting and applying University, Federal, State, and sponsoring agency policies and procedures, and collaborating with central business service operations and other stakeholders to support the University’s strategic goals.

The Senior Business Manager will play a key role in preparing financial and management reports to support long-range planning forecasts, budget recommendations, planning and analysis, and the strategic financial management of area resources. This position will also lead special projects and initiatives in collaboration with the Assistant Director or Director of Financial Affairs. The role includes developing and implementing specialized reports to support both short- and long-term financial forecasting and budget decisions.

Additionally, the Senior Business Manager will serve as a backup for the Infrastructure Assistant Director of Business and Finance, act as a mentor and key resource to peers within the Business Office, and ensure excellent business management support is provided to Department Heads, Directors, faculty, staff, and students.

Education and Experience

Qualified candidates will need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management, Finance, or related field of study
  • 4+ years of business administration, financial management, or related experience

Skills needed:

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, interpret and implement policies and procedures  
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and prepare complex data analysis and present data according to user requirements
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent planning, leadership, budgeting, financial analysis, problem-solving, organizational project management, and customer service skills  
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to influence and build work relationships among a diverse workforce at all levels
  • Must possess a learning orientation to changing technology impacting business processes, e.g. SAP, etc.  
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Demonstrate originality, creativity, and ability to resolve complex issues on a daily basis

What is helpful:

  • Higher Education experience
  • Six credit hours of accounting coursework  
  • A demonstrated knowledge of sponsor and University regulations and basic proficiency in all technical and professional skills related to business office and contract grant management
  • Knowledge of SAP, Cognos and Banner
