Job Summary
The Office of Indiana State Chemist (OISC) is seeking an Analytical Chemist in the Feed Laboratory. The main goal of the feed laboratory is to perform product label testing on animal feed and pet foods for regulatory purposes. As the Analytical Chemist, you will assist the Feed Laboratory Supervisor in achieving and maintaining operational excellence in conformity with Purdue University laboratory and safety standards, Office of Indiana State Chemist (OISC) Standards, and international standards such as ISO 17025:2017. You will perform chemical analysis using various analytical platforms within the feed laboratory and manage and maintain assigned instruments and equipment with the goal of minimizing downtime while enabling optimal functionality and performance conditions.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Performing moderate to complex chemical testing on commercial feed and pet food samples designated components (e.g. amino acids, vitamins, drugs, mycotoxins) as defined in manufacturers’ specifications using complex instrumentation that includes liquid chromatography with mass spectroscopy, ultraviolet, fluorescence and refractive index detection, gas chromatography with flame ionization detection and UV-VIS spectrophotometry
- Processing and evaluating data to determine whether quality control standards are met
- Documenting analyses and submitting reports for final review by section supervisor
- Maintaining common equipment used in the analytical laboratory such as LC and GC instruments with various detectors as well as UV-Visible spectrometers and extraction devices
- Troubleshooting problems that may arise during instrument analysis
- Participating in the installation and validation of new instruments
- Participating in developing new feed analysis methods, validating methods, and drafting standard operating procedures or research manuscript for publication
- Periodically preparing and giving presentations at conferences
- Participating in Proficiency Testing programs and collaborative studies
What We're Looking For:
Associate Analytical Chemist (P1)
- Bachelors degree in chemistry or related field
- 1 year of analytical laboratory experience
- In lieu of degree, an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.(Associate's + 3 years of experience; HS/GED + 5 years of experience)
- Analytical Chemistry, Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry, Computer software skills
Analytical Chemist (P2)
- Bachelors degree in chemistry or related field
- 2 years of analytical laboratory experience
- In lieu of degree, an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.(Associate's + 4 years of experience; HS/GED + 6 years of experience)
- Analytical Chemistry, Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry, Computer software skills
