Job Summary

The Coordinator for Civic Engagement promotes the development of students’ leadership and civic identity through the coordination and implementation of student civic engagement initiatives, programs, and services. The position is responsible for the coordination and promotion of programs and services in the Roger C. Stewart Leadership & Professional Development Department that exist to connect theory, practice, communities, and careers, and to forge synergies that will bridge learning and development opportunities between curricular and co-curricular learning. Along with department staff, the Coordinator will provide transformative on-campus and community-based experience for students to develop their leadership and civic identities in order to prepare them to facilitate positive change in local, national and global communities.

 

Serve on campus-wide committees representing Student Life and Student Academic Affairs. Collaborate with other students, staff and departments to enhance the quality of student life on the Purdue campus. Evening and weekend hours required.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate and promote civic engagement signature programs (ex.: Community Action Days, PurdueVotes Coalition, ACE Campus Food Pantry, Season of Sharing and Project Moveout)
  • Advise the ACE Campus Pantry student directors and oversee pantry operations and relationships with key partners (Food Finders Food Bank and the Baptist Foundation)
  • Cultivate and manage university-community partnerships, faculty partnerships, and alumni networks that enrich civic leadership programs
  • Provide service consultations for student, faculty and staff seeking co-curricular community engagement opportunities
  • Support student organizations seeking community service opportunities

The Roger C. Stewart Leadership & Professional Development Department (LEAD) focuses on the development of students’ leadership knowledge and abilities, civic identities, and professional skills. This is done through direct student engagement and support, providing transformative on-campus and community-based experiences, and the promotion of research-based leadership competencies and curriculums. We teach students to connect their classroom and out-of-class experiences to build greater meaning out of their Purdue education in order to prepare them to facilitate positive change in local, national, and global communities.

What We Are Looking For

 

Education and Experience:
Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • One year of experience working with college student leadership development programs or community engagement initiatives, program facilitation and program assessment

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education/Student Affairs, Leadership Development, Management, Education, Counseling, or related field 

 

Skills:
Required:                

  • Understanding of student development and leadership theories and demonstrated ability applying these theories to practice
  • Ability to work with both curricular and co-curricular stakeholders
  • Ability to facilitate groups that have multiple approaches/perspectives; particularly working within the multiple sub-cultures of a university campus
  • Strong organization and presentation skills
  • Ability to relate to college students with diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Understanding of basic assessment methods within student affairs
