Job Summary
Serve as Associate Environmental Technician (S1) in support of staff members in Radiological and Environmental Management who specialize in hazardous materials management. Learn and assist in the collection and processing of chemical and biological waste. Learn proper inspection of waste prior to pick-up and ensure compliance with University policy, State and Federal waste regulations, permit conditions and Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements. Learn to identify incompatible chemicals. Assist staff with generating and maintaining manifest documentation. Learn and assist in processing chemical waste. Blend, treat, package and label hazardous materials under direct supervision of chemist. Follow standard operating procedures. Learn and become efficient in performing routine waste facility inspections for safety and compliance with University policy, State and Federal waste regulation, and permit conditions Respond to chemical spills, accidents and emergencies on a 24-hour basis.

Identify incompatible chemicals. Generate and maintain manifest documentation. Process chemical waste. Blend, treat, package and label hazardous materials under moderate supervision of chemist. Follow standard operating procedures. Efficiently perform routine waste facility inspections for safety and compliance with University policy, State and Federal waste regulation, and permit conditions Respond to chemical spills, accidents and emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
This is a dual level position where the hiring manager will determine the level commensurate with the chosen candidate's experience.

What We're Looking for
Education and Experience Required:
As the S1 –Associate Environmental Safety Technician
- High School Degree or High School Equivalency (HSE) required
- College chemistry course work preferred
- Valid driver's license required
As the S2 Environmental Safety Technician you will need the above and following:
- Three (3) years of previous experience working with hazardous materials are required or three (3) years of experience in a similar position in industry, government or academia may also be considered
- Valid driver's license required
Skills Required:
- As the Associate Environmental Safety Technician (S1)
- May involve exposure to extreme temperatures, hazardous chemicals, close spaces and lifting requirements over 100 pounds
- Good written and verbal communication skills required
- A strong commitment to customer service and the Administrative Operations strategic goals is essential
- Basic computer skills and Microsoft Office experience is required
- Must be able to:
- wear personal protective equipment including a respirator
- lift and carry 50 to 80 lbs. frequently, and up to 100 + lbs occasionally
- Must:
- comply with Purdue's driving policy
- pass an initial and annual basic medical exam
- conform to applicable regulatory and safety requirements
- Must have:
- the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships and have mutual trust and respect with others
- high ethical and professional behavior standards
- strong work organization skills
