Job Summary

The Export Control Program Manager supports institutional compliance with U.S. export control laws, economic sanctions regulations, and research security requirements. This position plays a critical role in advising faculty and staff, reviewing research-related activities and agreements, and ensuring appropriate safeguards are in place for the handling of controlled technology and information. The Program Manager is also responsible for initiating and managing specific, multi-faceted projects of medium to high complexity and institutional impact. This includes developing and implementing control measures—such as restricted party screening, technology control plans, and protocols for high-risk international engagements—in collaboration with university partners, including Sponsored Program Services, IT Security, and legal counsel, while aligning with federal regulatory requirements and institutional policy.

 

Work Location: On-site, West Lafayette, Indiana. This position may be eligible for some hybrid work, but is mostly on-site. You must live within driving distance of campus.

What We’re Looking For:

Education and Experience
Qualified candidates will need:                                

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
  • Five (5) years of relevant experience in faculty- or student-facing roles involving program management, research compliance, research administration, or a closely related area.
  • Must be a U.S. person (citizen, permanent resident, “green card” holder) and be eligible to access export-controlled information upon date of hire.

 

Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of U.S. export control regulations (EAR, ITAR) and OFAC sanctions, as evidenced by prior experience applying these rules in academic, research, or industry settings
  • Proven ability to lead process improvement or compliance initiatives, preferably involving multiple stakeholders and documented through specific project outcomes, timelines, or deliverables
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience developing and delivering training, guidance materials, or compliance documentation (e.g., sample presentations, SOPs, or policy summaries may be requested)
  • Ability to interpret and analyze regulatory changes and translate them into practical institutional procedures or resource updates (interview scenarios may include review of recent regulatory shifts and how to respond operationally)
  • Proficiency with compliance and workflow support tools, such as restricted party screening platforms (e.g., Visual Compliance) and electronic research administration systems (e.g., PERA, Coeus, Cayuse)
  • Experience working collaboratively across units, including faculty, sponsored programs, legal, and IT; candidates should be prepared to describe specific examples of cross-functional coordination
  • Attention to detail and accuracy, particularly in classification determinations, documentation, and license assessments (assessment exercises may involve mock reviews)
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills, demonstrated through successful handling of concurrent deadlines or process improvement projects in prior roles
  • High standards of discretion and professional judgment, particularly when handling sensitive information, export-controlled technologies, or compliance decisions
