Business Development Advisor

Purdue University is looking for individuals who desire meaningful work that directly impacts Indiana's manufacturing sector.
The mission of the Manufacturing Extension Partnership Center (MEP) is to advance Indiana's prosperity, health, and quality of life. Each year, MEP serves hundreds of manufacturing companies, businesses, high tech start-ups, life science companies, governmental units, and not-for-profit organizations. Impacts include significant sales increases, cost reductions, capital investments, and jobs created or saved.
Under the mentoring of the Assistant Director, Business Development, the Business Development Advisor will be responsible for selling and managing consulting projects that involve helping businesses reach their workforce and competitive needs through efficiency, growth, and sustainability. This includes analyzing the needs of a manufacturing/industrial company or other business, determining the areas of improvement needed, developing work statements to address the areas of improvement, estimating the potential Return on Investment, presenting the proposed plan (including fees for the services) to the business executives, and executing Technical Assistance Agreements (contracts) with the client.
Develops networks and connections to position Purdue MEP as a major resource to business and industry. Creates and effectively manages a pipeline of business. Responsible for outreach relationship development to help ensure the Center's fiscal and strategic goals are met. Requires a high aptitude for technical and engineering-based skills. A requirement of performance metrics including, but not limited to: sales revenue, measurable and quantified company impact created for businesses in terms of growth, efficiency, quality, and customer satisfaction; to be regularly reviewed with management with a high expectation of success.
This position's primary service area will be Central Indiana up throughout the Northeast corridor (Ft. Wayne). The office location for this position will be within one of Purdue's statewide or partnering facilities with some flex office options in accordance with Purdue policy. This position requires travel in Indiana and occasional travel outside Indiana.



  •     Bachelor's degree in Management, Engineering, Technology.
  •     Four years of direct involvement in manufacturing and/or technical sales (which may include one or more of the following):
    •         Analyzing business performance
    •         Consulting to manufacturing and/or logistics clients
    •         Developing, testing, and delivering new services
    •         Identifying areas for improvement, implementing improvements, and measuring Return on Investment (ROI)
    •         Managing and recruiting subcontractors
    •         Managing technical service projects from agreement execution through implementation and reporting of outcomes
    •         Selling and delivering solution consulting projects
  •     Working knowledge of manufacturing or logistics Lean and quality systems
  •     Excellent verbal / written communication skills with the ability to create and present formal presentations, contract services, bids/quotes, work statements, and manage client portfolios.
  •     Strong interpersonal and customer service skills to develop professional relationships and productively interact with mid-level management and business executives.
  •     Superior organizational and project management skills, including the development of strategic and operational plans to ensure sales performance goals and standards are met.
  •     Ability to develop new business and sell technical services based on ROI
  •     Ability to respond quickly and effectively in a fast-paced work environment with frequent interruptions.
  •     Office computer skills.
  •     A valid US or Canadian driver’s license


  •     Master's degree in Engineering, Technology, or MBA combined with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology
  •     Lean, Six Sigma, and Project Management experience
  •     Working knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies, industrial safety requirements, and inventory and warehouse management
  •     Knowledge of environmental issues
