Job Summary
The College of Science at Purdue University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Sports Analytics at the assistant or associate professor level, based at Purdue’s Indianapolis campus. The position will be housed in the Department of Statistics and is intended to strengthen research and teaching at the intersection of statistical science, data science, and sports analytics. This position is part of an initiative to expand the Department of Statistics’ presence at the Indianapolis campus, including the recruitment of additional instructional faculty to support and advance the department’s teaching mission.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in statistics, biostatistics, sports analytics, or a closely related field by August 16, 2027 and have demonstrated excellence in research and a strong commitment to teaching. Outstanding applicants whose research is grounded in statistical science and motivated by sports or human-performance applications will be considered. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, statistical learning and machine learning, Bayesian methods, causal inference, functional data analysis, longitudinal and spatiotemporal data analysis, high-dimensional data, statistical computing, and other modern methods for complex sports data. Candidates should demonstrate the potential to contribute to core areas of statistics while developing impactful applications in sports analytics.
Principal Duties
Successful candidates will be expected to develop an independent research program in statistical science with strong connections to sports analytics, teach undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics and sports analytics, develop an external funding portfolio, build interdisciplinary connections with researchers and partners in sports and related data-intensive fields, and participate in department, college, and broader university activities.
The Department and College
Purdue’s Department of Statistics is consistently recognized as one of the top statistics programs in the country. The department advances statistical sciences and data science in both theory and applications, with strengths spanning statistical methodology, computation, machine learning, and interdisciplinary data science. The Sports Analytics position will add a distinctive application area in which modern statistical methods can be developed, evaluated, and translated to complex real-world data. The department also plays a central role in Purdue’s statistical science education and connects with broader data-intensive initiatives across the university.
The Department of Statistics is part of the College of Science, which encompasses the mathematical, computational, physical, and life sciences at Purdue. The College is the second-largest at Purdue with over 350 faculty members and more than 7,000 students. The College is pursuing significant new initiatives that align with campus-wide plans.
