What You'll be Doing:

Ensure the visible excellence of Purdue's campus grounds by supervising the personnel activities of a landscape maintenance crew within the Grounds Department. Perform duties related to landscape construction, repair, and maintenance while leading daily crew operations.

Responsibilities include interviewing, mentoring, training, scheduling, assigning, and inspecting the work of service staff. Administer work assignments, order supplies, approve expenditures, and ensure projects are completed as directed by the Landscape Maintenance Manager. Maintain accurate time reporting for recharge activities within SAP.

Assist in establishing and recommending departmental policies, procedures, and goals that support the department's mission. Supervise, plan, and direct the crew's project, stewardship, and service operations, including the construction, maintenance, and upkeep of campus landscapes to ensure the overall appearance of university grounds.

Additional responsibilities include snow removal, pesticide and herbicide application, grounds maintenance, general labor, and equipment maintenance and repair.

What We're Looking For:

Education and Experience
Qualified Candidates Will Need:

  • HS Diploma/GED
  • Four years’ experience in grounds maintenance or closely related area
  • Supervisory experience necessary
  • Associate degrees in Horticulture, Forestry, Landscaping or related area preferred

 

Skills Needed:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills necessary
  • Good work organizational skills required
  • Good verbal and written communication skills needed 
  • Ability to read blueprints required.  Experience in landscape and turf irrigations systems necessary
  • Equipment operation (i.e., backhoe, bobcat, tree spade, tractors, mowers, etc.) required
  • Knowledge of insect/disease control, proper nutrition, growth habits and pruning methods for annual flowers, and ornamental trees and shrubs required
  • Knowledge of growth habits, fertilizers, pesticides, equipment, etc. used in turf maintenance and construction necessary
  • Working knowledge of hard surface maintenance and repair desired
  • Working knowledge of turf irrigation required
  • Valid driver’s license required, CDL preferred
  • Indiana Pesticide Applicator's License (3A, 3B) or ability to obtain required
  • Subject to 24-hour callback for emergencies
