Job Summary

The College of Engineering solicits applications for a Lecturer position at the West Lafayette campus.  The lecturer will become an integral part of a College of Engineering Honors Program (CoEHP, (https://engineering.purdue.edu/Honors) community of faculty, instructors, and student support staff who are driven to prepare engineering honors students to be exceptional interdisciplinary designers, problem solvers, collaborators, and leaders in their field.

The lecturer will develop and teach courses in the areas of engineering design and analysis for honors undergraduate students. A particular focus will be on adapting and delivering multiple sections of ENGR 16100 and 16200, a first-year engineering design and physics course, as well as  bringing chemical, biological, and environmental examples into the curriculum. ENGR 16100 and 16200 are 4.00 credit hour classes designed to introduce students to the engineering profession using physics-based, multidisciplinary, societally relevant content.  Students develop engineering approaches to systems, generate and explore creative and innovative ideas, and use of computational methods to support design decisions. 

 

Job Duties

The lecturer will also coordinate across units in the College of Engineering and Honors College to offer upper-division courses and opportunities to support engineering honors students. This will include summer opportunities led by CoEHP, such as study abroad and learning outcomes for the Seminar for Top Engineering Prospects (STEP) program. The lecturer is expected to maintain excellence in educational techniques, technologies and industrial practice in the support of students in their journeys to becoming exceptional engineers and global leaders. They will be provided opportunities for professional development and dissemination of CoEHP innovations and best practices at educational conferences.
 

The lecturer will, for any course taught or supervised:

  • Hold office hours commensurate with course length and level each week.
  • Perform assessment and refresh course content as needed to maintain high pedagogical and technical standards.
  • Develop appropriate course syllabi for assigned classes and report midterm and final grades for students in a timely fashion in accord with university policy.
  • Abide by all course policies for any course taught as given by the program director for the course.
  • Attend training, meetings and professional development to maintain high quality
  • Assist in the administration of the CoEHP curriculum. These duties include assisting in the training of instructors, conducting evaluation and assessment, and support of outreach events.

Qualifications

  • PhD. in an engineering field
  • Proficiency with undergraduate physics, modern programming languages, and design
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills, the ability to work with people of various backgrounds, good time management and organizational skills, the ability to learn and adapt to changing learning environments, and the ability to work with students, undergraduate and graduate, and faculty.

 

Preferred Experience

  • Three years of teaching engineering courses
  • Supervisory experience of students or entry-level employees
  • Experience in engineering design and community engagement
  • Experience mentoring project-based courses, especially those which satisfy capstone requirements, is also preferred. Equivalent experience will be considered.
