Medical Assistant

Job Summary

The Medical Assistant supports the provider and nursing staff with the implementation of patient care, following nursing and clinic policies and procedures.  Major responsibilities include monitoring charts and vital signs; handling specimens; completing requisitions, forms, and reports; participating in nursing staff meetings and quality improvement initiatives; and maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.   


This position is split between the Monon and Wolcott clinics.  Clinic hours are:
Monday through Thursday from 7 am to 7 pm
Friday from 8 am to 5 pm
Saturday from 8 am to noon


Responsibilities are to:
•    Support the mission and vision of the North Central Nursing Clinics
•    Comply with all HIPAA rules
•    Obtain and enter necessary patient information into the electronic health record (EHR) and state immunization registry
•    Assess the patient's status upon arrival and continuously thereafter
•    Recognize physical and emotional distress and report concerns to the Nurse Practitioner
•    Use common assessment skills
•    Recognize hazards to patient safety
•    Use equipment and supplies per policies and protocols
•    Recognize malfunction in equipment and report issues
•    Implement nursing and clinic policies and procedures
•    Implement Nurse Practitioner orders 
•    Assist provider with routine procedures, including phlebotomy and vaccine administration
•    Collect and handle specimens
•    Maintain patient confidentiality
•    Prepare patient for special procedures
•    Observe changes in patient's status and advise provider of changes
•    May report negative / normal test results to patients
•    Assist individuals and families to assume the responsibility for the prevention of illness and the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health
•    Work with check-in and check-out desk to manage patient flow and make appointments and referrals
•    Complete bi-annual CPR recertification class and participate in annual training review of OSHA Blood-borne Pathogens, Tb and HIPAA standards and requirements
•    Participate in nursing staff, assigned meetings, and quality improvement initiatives
•    Keep office area, clinic supply room and exam rooms adequately stocked

  • Medical assistant certification
  • Strong communication skills to support internal and external customer needs

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to lift and carry 10 pounds frequently and up to 20 pounds occasionally
