Job Summary

The Research Technician provides husbandry and care to a variety of laboratory animals including (But not limited to) rodents, rabbits, sheep, swine, horses, cows, poultry in conventional, barrier and barn housing as scheduled independently with limited supervision.  Changes cages/clean stalls, wash, autoclave and prepare animal caging competent for use in the animal facilities.  Works with animals exposed to biological, chemical and radiation hazards.  Performs other cleaning and maintenance duties as necessary.  Occasional euthanasia of rodents.  This technician provides both rodent breeding services as well as more advanced technical services as approved.  This technician meets with the lab staff and coordinates specialty work with Managers as well as Senior Research Technicians.  This position will also provide training support to new hire technicians.

What We're Looking For:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Two or more years of animal care related experience if internal
  • Two or more years of direct research animal care experience
  • Ability to work in Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Box and navigate rodent breeding software
  • Attention to detail
  • Knowledge of and skills in rodent breeding
  • Animal health and husbandry knowledge with rodents, rabbits, poultry and livestock
  • Ability to work in a team environment and give direction, as well as work independently
  • Exhibit professional and leadership behavior in speaking with all staff (Purdue and non-Purdue interactions)
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to work overtime and on weekends/holidays as required
  • Ability to pull/push large heavy equipment; push/pull equipment up and down ramps; repetitive lifting/turning/bending/reaching
  • Ability to enter stall or caging with large animals (cow/horse/sheep/pig) and work in the stall with the animals present
  • Exhibit professional behavior in speaking with all staff (Purdue and non-Purdue interactions)
