Job Summary

Purdue University is seeking a compassionate Student Support Specialist to serve as a vital resource, advocate, and referral agent for students impacted by sexual assault, stalking, and relationship violence. In this role, you will empower individuals by providing clear, timely information and facilitating access to confidential resources, enabling students to make informed decisions that best meet their unique needs. You will coordinate campus and community support systems to help students navigate these sensitive experiences, offering crisis response, individual and community-based interventions, and advocacy throughout the criminal justice and campus judicial processes.

 

You will ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, including the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), Title IX, and the Clery Act, while collaborating closely with campus and community partners to deliver comprehensive support tailored to survivors’ needs. Your dedication will help foster a safer, more informed, and responsive campus environment where students can find the support they need to heal and thrive.

This is a Limited Term Duration position with funding secured for two years, with the possibility of extension. 

What We Are Looking For

Experience and Education:

 

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services field (e.g., social work, health education, public health, psychology, criminal justice) or a related field
  • Two (2) years of experience in human services or a related field (such as social work, health education, public health, psychology, or criminal justice)
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted

 

Preferred:

  • Master’s or advanced degree.
  • Experience with domestic violence or sexual assault victim advocacy services, preferably in a higher education setting. 

 

Skills:

  • Ability to maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and work effectively with students, faculty, and other constituencies.
  • Ability to operate calmly and effectively under stressful conditions.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to sexual and relationship violence issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish rapport with individuals in difficult situations.
  • Must be student-service focused with good listening skills.
  • Ability to make independent judgements, problem solve, apply discretion, and consult when appropriate.
  • Working knowledge of current literature and best practices regarding sexual assault and interpersonal violence, including federal regulations (Title IX, and Campus Security Act).
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications including Power Point, Access, Excel, and Outlook. 
  • Ability to serve in an on-call rotation to provide 24/7 crises support for the Purdue Community and work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must have a driver’s license and reliable vehicle to transport students to appointments as needed.
