As a Purdue University firefighter, you will provide fire, rescue, and EMS services to the Purdue- West Lafayette campus. EMS services are provided at the Advanced Life Support level with two transport ambulances and an ALS certified engine. All staff are trained in airport rescue and fire fighting (ARFF), hazardous materials response, and technical rescue. The Purdue Fire Department provides support to the Purdue University Airport, Purdue athletics, convocations, and all major events on campus. All firefighters participate in department training, campus familiarization, equipment maintenance, and pre-plan activities.
The Purdue Fire Department offers competitive pay with longevity, paid/floating holidays, and paramedic pay after 1 year of service.
What We're Looking For
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or High School Equivalency (HSE)
- Indiana State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification or Paramedic license
- Indiana Firefighter 1 &2 (training provided within 12 months of employment)
- Hazardous Materials Technician (training provided within 12 months of employment)
- Valid CPAT card preferred at the time of the interview
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- A valid US or Canadian driver’s license
Skills Needed:
- Must be physically and mentally capable of performing all duties of a firefighter and EMT
- Must have:
- successfully completed Hazardous Materials Technician certification or be able to complete within twelve months of employment in this position
- the ability to lift and carry 50-80 lbs. frequently, up to 100 lbs. or more occasionally and drag up to 165 lbs
- knowledge of the principles and processes for providing good customer and personal services
- Must have strong oral & written communication skills
- basic computer skills. Exposed to job hazards and working conditions associated with firefighting and emergency medical service
- Respiratory protection will be required during specific work operations as determined by the supervisor
- The use of a respirator will require medical testing to assure physical fitness to use such equipment
- Prior to employment must pass a strict physical and psychological exams and successfully complete the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
- Successfully complete a physical ability test annually
Preferred:
- One year of experience as an EMT or Paramedic
- One year of experiences as an Indiana Firefighter
