Job Summary

 

 

The Instruction Specialist supports the School of Engineering Technology by providing both instructional and operational assistance in the electrical and smart manufacturing labs. This role works closely with faculty, staff, statewide operational leadership team, and students to co-develop and facilitate effective course delivery and hands-on project support. The Instruction Specialist is the lead role in applying expertise in AC and DC electrical power, signaling, instrumentation, digital systems, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), networking, manufacturing, and mechanical systems to ensure the smooth operation of formal instructional labs such as the Smart Learning Factory, Industrial loT, and Smart Foundry labs within the Engineering Technology department. Responsibilities include guiding students with lab projects, maintaining lab equipment, and contributing to a collaborative learning environment that reflects Purdue’s commitment to innovation and excellence in engineering education.

What We Are looking For :

 

Education and Experience

 

Qualified candidates will need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering Technology, Educational Design, or a related field 
  • Four (4) years of experience in one or more of the following:
    • teaching at the high school or college level
    • Industry related experience in manufacturing systems, processes, hardware and software, robotic and automated systems programs, debugging, and troubleshooting
  • Awareness of modern computing tools, language, and trends, including AI.  
  • Experience in innovative problem-solving and design

 

 

Skills needed:

  • Strong initiative with an ability to work independently with limited supervision, and in a team-based environment.    
  • Excellent technical and professional communication skills, interpersonal, public speaking, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Familiar with and competent in electrical device construction and operation, programming, software, and data collection processes related to electronics, smart manufacturing, robotics, and information technology skills.
  • Ability to learn new technologies, including AI
  • Expert in Microsoft tools and Excel, especially in an engineering environment. 
  • Teachable attitude, willingness to learn new tools and methods, and ability to critique operations and provide useful feedback. 
  • Must be able to problem solve, function under pressure, meet deadlines, and demonstrate creativity in a fast-paced, changing work environment. 
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with frequent interruptions
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills. 
  • Positive attitude, patience, and the ability to explain problems and instruct students.

 

What is Helpful:

  • Experience interpreting academic materials for classroom implementation and grading a plus.
  • Knowledge of an engineering design cycle
  • Experience in industrial networking and data management with software such as Ignition, Python, and Kepware.
