Senior Grounds Mechanic
Job Summary
The Senior Grounds Equipment Mechanic reports to the athletics facilities superintendent and oversees a comprehensive daily maintenance and preventive maintenance program. This includes and is not limited to the repair of failing equipment, keeping records of parts and labor needed to repair each piece of equipment, and placing orders for parts and supplies needed for equipment or service. You will be responsible for communicating any needs or problems relating to the maintenance or repair of equipment to the superintendent and/or assistant superintendent as well as scheduling and directing the work assignments of these repairs. In addition, you will be responsible for placing safety as a top priority and maintaining a clean maintenance building and service area.
What You'll be Doing:
- Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical defects/failures in various maintenance equipment including and not limited to, diesel, electric, and gasoline-powered automobiles, trucks, trenchers, sweepers, rollers, mowers, hydraulic systems and other mechanical equipment used in utility work
- Instruct and/or train service maintenance workers regarding preventive maintenance, and the proper cleaning of and safe operation of equipment
- Prioritize preventative equipment repairs and daily maintenance work
- Maintain a preventive maintenance program within budget on all equipment, and purchases repair parts inventory purchases, equipment conditions, cost of repairs and preventive maintenance for all equipment.
- Spot check equipment for performance, frequently make emergency repairs to equipment, and service or supervise servicing of equipment prior to use
- Perform and /or supervise winter maintenance
- Equipment tear down and reassemble general repairs and painting to maintain top quality of all equipment
- Oversee shop area maintenance, cleanliness, and complying with all Purdue and OSHA regulations
- Regulate employees’ use of equipment in the absence of superintendent and assistant superintendent, if needed, and perform other duties as directed by the superintendent
- Perform maintenance such as painting, general cleaning, minor building repairs
- Assist with night security
- Assist with stadium and arena clean-up, and snow removal as needed
Required:
- HS diploma/GED
- 4 years small engine and hydraulic experience
- Experience with supervision of general daily maintenance of equipment
- Ability keeping work area and maintenance building in very neat and clean order
- Working knowledge of light and heavy maintenance equipment and automotive apparatuses
- Skills in the use of a variety of equipment repair tools, and the making of various types of mechanical repairs
- Working knowledge of the theory, care, and operation of internal combustion engines and mowing equipment
- Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the profession
- Ability to weld and gas torch brazing
- Ability to move heavy objects
- Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions while repairing equipment
- Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance work
- Possession of a valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license
