Academic Advisors cultivate a student-centered advising practice grounded in mutual respect, dignity, self-awareness, and authenticity. They utilize an asset-based approach that values students’ unique identities and social capital, meeting them where they are in their academic journey. Advisors guide students in course selection, registration, and understanding degree requirements, while also helping them connect with campus opportunities, activities, and programs related to their academic and career goals.
They maintain consistent communication and proactive outreach to support students’ progress, using data and academic audits to identify needs. Advisors assess when a student’s situation requires referral to campus resources and assist in facilitating those connections. They are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of student records and ensuring compliance with university policies. Additionally, advisors educate students on the university’s structures, systems, policies, and best practices to help them navigate their educational experience with confidence.
