Farm Manager (ACRE)

Job Summary

The Agronomy Research Center Superintendent will oversee and provide leadership for all activities at the Agronomy Center for Research and Education (ACRE), including managing crop and plant production related to both research and rotational crops. Additional duties will include but are not limited to:

 

  • Coordinating with the campus research community on research projects
  • Managing the farm facility and equipment including maintenance, replacements, and leasing arrangements
  • In conjunction with departmental representatives, developing and promoting a strategic plan for the future of ACRE
  • Coordinating with users to facilitate safety training for all faculty and staff using ACRE, facility inspections, worker protection standards, and other safety-related training and education
  • Coordinating the setup and operation of various tillage and land preparation implements and ensuring the calibration and setup of planters, drills, and seeders, crop sprayers and fertilizer spreaders
  • Purchasing supplies and farm production inputs
  • Maintaining production and financial records, and hiring and managing employees via a team approach
  • Providing some public relations and extension outreach activities when needed

Required:

  • Bachelors degree in an agriculture-related field
  • 6 years experience with precision planting of crops and application of nutrients and/or pesticides
  • Demonstrated supervisory and corn and soybean production management experience
  • Understanding of field plot research, design, and research scale equipment
  • Knowledge of field experimental research techniques
  • Responsible judgment of farm's fiscal management
  • Willingness to host touring agricultural groups and introduce them to research station operations
  • Ability to supervise and work cooperatively with a broad spectrum of people (scientists, technicians, commercial business people, sales staff, repair and service technicians, and hired labor)
  • Good communications skills, initiative, drive, leadership, and desire to work with agronomic and other crops in an applied university research farm environment
  • Must be familiar with or willing to learn software and hardware needs associated with GPS machine control and data collection
  • Travel as needed to attend meetings and represent the college/university
  • Valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license

  • Master of Science

Additional Information:

  • On-site housing is available but not a requirement. If the recipient chooses to live on-site, a nominal rent, renters insurance, and utilities will be the renter's responsibility.

  • FLSA: Exempt (Not Eligible For Overtime)
