Analytical Chemist

The Office of the Indiana State Chemist is seeking a Feed Analytical Chemist. This position will assist the Feed Laboratory Supervisor in achieving and maintaining operational excellence in conformity with Purdue University laboratory and safety standards, Office of Indiana State Chemist (OISC) Standards, and international standards such as ISO 17025:2017. The primary rersponsibilities will include:


  • Performing chemical analysis using various analytical platforms within the feed laboratory
  • Managing and maintaining assigned instruments and equipment with the goal of minimizing downtime while enabling optimal functionality under the defined performance conditions
  • Conducting chemical analyses (moderate to complex) on commercial feed samples, analyzing for designated components stated in manufacturers’ specifications using computer-controlled instrumentation which include high performance liquid chromatography (LC); gas chromatography (GC); UV-VIS spectrophotometry; and manual and computer-integrated titration
  • During the hemp growing season, participate in cannabinoids analysis
  • Managing and maintaining chromatographic instruments such as HPLC or UPLC coupled with various detectors (UV-VIS, FLR, IR, MS) or GC-FID, plus other equipment as needed to ensure proper maintenance of the instrumentation
  • Assisting in method development, method validation, and drafting Standard Operating Procedures; Participate in Proficiency Testing program as required
  • Periodically preparing and giving presentations / posters, co-authoring journal articles
  • Maintaining general laboratory housekeeping



  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related field
  • 2 years’ experience in analytical chemistry and complex laboratory procedures
  • Familiarity with basic procedure of analytical chemistry such as solvent extractions and titrimetric, gravimetric, and colorimetric procedures
  • Knowledge of basic chemical reactions and basic calculations
  • Knowledge of high pressure liquid chromatography (LC)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Master's degree
  • Knowledge of mass spectrometry technique and familiarity with gas chromatography
  • Familiarity with method validation and with quality control protocols
  • Ability to search the literature for analytical methods and to implement and evaluate methods performance
